Yes, I promise to write about the wonderful week that I had with Julie visiting.
And then I want to write about the weird week when I returned to work…and participated in the first round of interviews to replace me! My wonderful boss allowed me to be an important part of those interviews. But it also drove home that I am RETIRING!!! Kind of shock city for the Queen of Denial.
I shall also have to write about being back on prednisone for my knee and hip, and the frustration of having to wait until October 21st to see the orthopedic surgeon, just to get that knee shot full of cortisone.
But today, today was a glorious feast of birthday goodies, funny cards, gift cards to Barnes & Noble, Borders and to AMAZON! Do the people I work with know me? Yes, they do…
My boss bought me lunch, a cheese burger Happy Meal with a vanilla milk shake. Sort of an in house joke with us, and just what I wanted after eating myself silly on the goodies. She also did some grocery shopping for me, saving me a trip.
The department secretary, my dear friend Jan, brought in a gooey butter cake that melted in your mouth. Talk about good, nothing short of decadent. She also brought me supper, home made meat loaf and fresh green beans. She makes me laugh, food for soul. She gives me supper, food for the body.
Sue, the insurance guru in my department, gave me a flameless candle that has a witch on the outside and a motion sensor that sets off funny Halloween sounds when some one walks by. I love it! She also brought in a Texas Mud sheet cake. A thick rich brownie, frosted with fudge. That was the first thing I sampled. That along with a cup of the very bad office coffee, I was flying on sugar, chocolate and caffeine…not much work got done, but it was just plain fun.
Sandy, our accounts payable clerk, is a retired Navy cook. She did a stint of duty at Camp David. She can bake like no one else can in the office. Her gift to the goodie table in the front office of HR was a delectable cherry crisp. Better than a pie since there was only the top crust…of course that was made from oats, butter, brown sugar and cinnamon, no calories there, right? Right.
I was high enough on sugar that I left the office without my cane! Of course now I am crashing big time, but it was worth each and every bite, because I know the love that went into the preparation. More food for the soul.
I am not looking forward to the walk out to the car tomorrow, or the walk into the office, worth it all though, worth it all.
Thank you all for the phone calls, the emails, the cards that made me laugh. I am so blessed. For someone who has died not once but twice, I have a life full of laughter, love, beauty and joy. Years that I can look on as gifts, just as I look on you, my friends. I’m thinking that I would like maybe another 20 or 25 years…even with the tears and pain, the love and laughter is stronger every time. After all I now have a chance to be a great grandmother, wouldn’t that just be the neatest thing ever.
So take care, enjoy what tomorrow brings, and keep those cards and letters coming!
The Leila Witch who is now 66 years old!
PS. Anyone know what will help a sugar crash headache?
And my thanks to the Gryphonrhi and WinkingStar for helping me get this posted. Now I can crash in peace.
