This Can Only End... 4/?

When Arthur finally got home that night, he went into the kitchen to make some tea. Tea was the only thing in the world that calmed Arthur down. Well, except for Merlin. And wasn’t that just the overwhelming problem? Merlin was Arthur best friend. No, Merlin was Arthur only true friend. How can he just ruin that for, what? A relationship? Arthur has only ever been burnt before and truly hates high school romance: it always ends poorly with a shitload of drama. Great, just what he needed!

His tea has just finished steeping and he started to convert the dark brown liquid into a creamy and sweet concoction (the only way to have tea when in the middle of a dilemma) when his father walked into the kitchen.

“Where have you been, Arthur? It is 12:30 on a school night! What were you thinking?” Uther all but yelled.

Arthur was genuinely surprised. Not because Uther was yelling - that was his usual mode of communication - but because Uther was home. So, Arthur stupidly uttered the first question that came to his mind, “Uh, I thought you were out of the country. America, right?”

“I came home early to be with my son!” This was false. Uther had actually come home because his business partners in America has accepted his working terms just to get rid of him quicker. “And I come home and you aren’t here, Arthur! Where were you? Oh don’t tell me. You were with that little gay friend of yours, weren’t you!” Arthur flinched at the mention of Merlin. Uther has always hated Merlin, and when he found out Merlin was gay it was just another thing to hate about him.

Arthur remembers the first argument Uther had about Merlin homosexuality. Uther used the word ‘faggot.’ It is the only time that Arthur had lifted a hand against his father. Arthur had told Uther in no uncertain terms that if he degraded Merlin with that word in his presence ever again, he would leave and never look back. Arthur knows that although Uther said ‘gay’ he meant ‘faggot’, and that just grates on his already shot nerves.

“Yes, father! I was with my best friend, Merlin! And I understand you think homosexuality is like a plague but maybe you should just get the fuck over it,” Arthur yelled with all his might, spilling his tea. This, Arthur knew, was not the smart move. Now, Arthur was forced to sit through a lecture about the perversion of homosexuality, and how Merlin is twisting Arthur away from his goals of running Uther’s company when he comes of age. Arthur has held this lecture many times in his short life, and he recognizes that real life isn’t like this. He knows other people don’t think like this. He knows that just because his father is narrow minded, doesn’t mean that the whole world is. Arthur sits there sipping is cold tea, nodding his head to his father, all the while thinking about the way Merlin’s lips felt against his. That, that was real.

“Merlin.  Arthur. Go retrieve the television set from the library. This, your quest, will be the origin point for your destiny,” Doc Drake said during class a week later. Merlin and Arthur just looked at each other and shrugged. They were used to Drake’s odd prophesying where they were concerned.

Walking down the hall Merlin and Arthur’s hands brushed each other accidently as they turned into the stacks of the library. Arthur could not control himself from trying to contain all of his mixed emotions any longer. Over the past week he had been feeling anger, confusion, desire, hatred, and worst of all guilt. However, the emotion weighing most heavily on his mind in that moment was desire. He fervently pushed Merlin into the shelves and pressed his body into alignment against Merlin’s. He fit his knee in between Merlin’s legs as he started to nip at Merlin’s lips. They spent fifteen minutes necking in the stacks knocking down quite a few books in the process.

All of a sudden Arthur pulled away and said, “Shit, Doc Drake!” He started to walk away leaving a dazed and confused Merlin, but took two long strides back and grabbed him hard. He dove in for one last passionate kiss. His grip loosened, and he eyed Merlin’s bruised lips with a smirk. Then he walked towards the TV.

All Merlin could think was,

What the fuck just happened?
