TITLE: Too Close to the Flame
SUBJECT: Axis Powers Hetalia; England/USA
NOTES: My last FST of these two seemed to focus more on the 1700s, and this one deals with the twenty-first century, and the current status of the "special relationship". Basically, it's an FST about their marital problems (and hilariously enough, those are NOT my words, but the American ambassador to England... I've lost the link to the article, but he basically said that the relationship between the US and England is like a married couple: they have fights but they aren't going to get divorced over it). The special relationship in the latter years of the 20th century and the 2000s has faced a lot of strains and a lot of misunderstandings and hurt feelings, and I tried to portray that in this FST. BASICALLY THE US AND ENGLAND ARE CRAPPY SPOUSES?!
01: Four Walls by Charlotte Martin
"In a neglected olive tree
Here is the part you reach for me.
Say that you have no need of this.
Say it again,
Say it again,
Say it again,
Again again again
Gonna feel my way around you
And then you're gonna get down on your knees
And grow accustomed to the darkness
And see what you're supposed to see.
Head up straight
I know what I'm doing.
Head up straight
I know what I'm doing."
02: Kansas by Vienna Teng
"It's not regret,
Just an unexpected accounting of debts,
Only now called
It's not regret
Just remembrance is all
Of how close we had come
The war almost won
But I sent up our flag and moved on...
You and I
Lost to the winter like Kansas.
And all my goodbyes
Flat on the table like Kansas."
03. Gimme Sympathy by Metric
"I'll remember someday all the chances we took.
We're so close to something better left unknown
We're so close to something better left unknown.
I can feel it in my bones:
Gimme sympathy
After all of this is gone
Who'd you rather be?
The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?
Oh, seriously,
You're gonna make mistakes, you're young,
Come on, baby, play me something
Like Here Comes the Sun"
04. The Bleeding Heart Show by The New Pornographers
“Watch 'em run, although it's the minimum, heroic
We quit the room
Quit so our thoughts could rest.
Rest them, I'll never move?
That's when we grab a hold
Of whatever it is we fell into,
Lousy with your content,
With what the majestic cannot find,
In business of your lives
The perception, it is wrong, mile after mile
The phantom taste drinking wine from your heels."
05. The Dumbing Down of Love by Frou Frou
“Well painted passion
You rightly expect
Impersonation
The dumbing down of love.
Jaded in anger
Love underwhelms you
No box of chocolates
Whichever way you fall.
And if I tell you,
Lover alone without love,
What will happen?
Lover alone without love,
Will you listen?"
06. Losing a Friend by The Cardigans
"You're losing a friend.
You got it all wrong.
It's not about revenge.
But you're losing a friend.
I didn't see it coming
With my head stuck in the sand
But now I'm loosing a friend.
And it's keeping me up
It's the ribbons I tied,
I would rather just die
Go to hell and crawl back
Than let you go.
You're losing a friend."
07. Habit by Charlotte Martin
“Surely I'll break this habit - us.
Surely I'll come back from this misuse - trust.
Not every wound here can be numb or let go of.
Can't you just stay, pretend you love or loved?
[…]
Could you stand there
like that?
Keep your eyes on me.
For one more minute
let our habit be...
It's so automatic:
the avalanche
of knowing I loved you
and you just can't back."
08. Unhappy Birthday by The Smiths
“I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday.
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday.
'Cause you're evil
And you lie.
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
But I won't cry.
[...]
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight.
From the one you left behind."
09. Why Do you Love Me? by Garbage
“I've done ugly things and I have made mistakes.
And I am not as pretty as those girls in magazines
I am rotten to my core if they're to be believed.
[…]
Why do you love me?
Why do you love me?
Why do you love me, it's driving me crazy."
10. Hear Me Out by Frou Frou
“Oh go ahead and lie to me.
You could say anything.
Small talk will be - just fine.
Your voice is everything,
We owe it to love
And it all depends on you.
So listen up - this sun hasn't set -
I refuse to believe that it's only me feeling -
Just hear me out - i'm not over you yet.
It's love on the line can you handle it?"
11. Lie in the Sound by Trespassers William
“I love you more than I should.
So much more than is good for me.
More than is good...
Oh, the timing is cruel.
Oh, I need and don't want to need
More than I should.
I am falling -
Say my name -
And I'll lie in the sound.
What is love but whatever
My heart needs around?"
12. Drip Drop Teardrop by The Cardigans
“I'm gonna watch you while you get me wrong.
I'm gonna sing until you hate this song.
I'm gonna tell you in my sweetest voice.
I'm gonna choose you 'cause you have no choice.
This funny thing we got
Is never gonna stop, oh no."
