The Good, the Bad, and the Bubbly

Well, the day didn't start out quite as well as I had hoped.. I was up til about 4am last night preparing my talk, then I got up this morning at about 8:30 and went to get a haircut. The place was supposed to open at 9, but they weren't open when I got there, so I just sat in my car and waited for over half an hour, expecting someone to show up any time. I finally went to the door and on a little piece of paper they said that they are currently under-staffed and wouldn't be opening until 11. I still had a lot to do to prepare for my presentation, so almost an hour wasted was not good.

Then I went to finish some of the stuff I was preparing and print off a copy for everyone at the meeting, and my printer wouldn't print black ink. It was about 20 minutes before I was supposed to be there at this point, and I was feeling more than a little stressed. I really felt like I was under attack. I prayed as best as I could remind myself to through my stress and frustration.

I wanted to show one of the videos that I made this year, as an example of my work, but I discovered that I don't have a copy of it on my computer; I thought I did. And I didn't have time to copy one on. I did have a DVD with the video on it, but my computer's DVD drive doesn't work (I ordered a new one two weeks ago, which hasn't even shipped yet, but that's a whole different story). So I grabbed my mom's computer, but she couldn't find the adapter piece to connect it to the projector. So I grabbed my brother's computer and finally showed up to the meeting about 10 minutes late. Most of the people were well into eating their lunch.

Next, I didn't have the right cable to connect my brother's computer to the projector. More stress. My brother hunted one down, only to find that the adapter for his laptop wasn't functioning right, so we had to find a different kind of cable. Now I'm running out of time; I'm about 7 minutes past when I should have started my presentation. So I had to just start and hope that my brother could get it working before I got the point where I wanted to show the video.

Flustered, frustrated, and with no time to pray I had to begin my talk. It started out kind of rough, and it took me a while before I finally got a rhythm and got comfortable. The middle 6 minutes or so of the talk was the best, because as I got near the end my mom kept giving me the signal that I was running out of time, and I realized that I hadn't yet even gotten to the part about specifically what I do.

Some of the people seemed board out of their mind, but a lot of them seemed really interested in what I do. Most rushed back to work right away afterward, since I had run long, so I couldn't get much feedback or interaction, but the few that stayed were excited for what I'm doing. All in all I would say that it was a good day, despite the attacks at the beginning.

The rest of the day was great. I hung out with my brother and his girlfriend and tasted two terriffic Belgian beers she brought back from her last trip to Brussels (she's a flight attendant). One was called Hoegaarden Grand Cru and the other was Fruit Interdit; without a doubt two of the most outstanding beers I have tasted. Then I worked on some video projects and finished the night talking with a really terrific friend on the phone for an hour.

Sum total: a dynamite day.
