Very interesting replies to the "Miss" poll! I don't really have anything to add to the discussion, except for what I said earlier about how I've always seen "ma'am" as the female equivalent of "sir", rather than as an old lady term. Just feels more respectful to me. But obviously this is one of those your-mileage-may-vary things!

I'm finally reading Krakauer's Into Thin Air, which is really fascinating so far. Last night I started wiki-hopping to find out more about the various locations in the book, and I came across Cerro Torre. Just looking at that photo scares the hell out of me, much less the idea of climbing it. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm afraid of heights, but maybe I'm just afraid of falling -- though I suppose that's the same thing, huh? Reminds me of how I'm now scared of caves, thanks to a visit to Carlsbad Caverns when I was a teen. Still, the book is great, as are the Everest documentaries I downloaded and watched today.
