Today has been rather frustrating. No energy whatsoever, plus what appears to be some type of stomach illness. Ugh! I ended up crawling back into bed for a large part of the early evening. Fortunately, the worst seems to have passed. I'm also quite cheered up by
these photos of Jamie at a BAFTA party today (via
dryope). Wow. When I saw them, he left me speechless.
Now I'm reading the Ravelry boards, and someone started a thread about internet pet peeves. Most seem specific to message boards, but several struck a chord. Anyone in the mood for a venting session?
(Disclaimers: These aren't directed at anyone in particular, because my memory's so dreadful that I often forget who - if anyone - does what! Also, they're entirely subjective, and people are certainly within rights to post however they might like!)
1. Complete lack of capitalization. I know it's a stylistic thing, but I'm getting old and have a hard time reading it.
2. "Heh." This is 100% a personal bias. For me the connotation is all wrong. Whenever I see it, my brain pictures the writer raising an eyebrow and sneering. If it's meant in a snarky way, that's fine. But otherwise it just feels like the writer is mocking the intended recipient.
3. I'm copying this one from the Ravelry boards: "When people format all their posts to be bold, or italic, or worst of all, in bright colours. It smacks of 'my posts are more important than everyone else’s SO I WILL MAKE YOU NOTICE THEM'." Yes! Putting a line or two in small text for emphasis is one thing, but doing the entire reply that way drives me crazy. Same thing with specific fonts. I'd prefer my default display font, thanks.
4. Really blinky or active animated .gifs. Yeah, they can be fun, and I've used several in my time. Too often, though, they're a distraction. Like I said above, I'm not about to tell people to stop using them! That's what AdBlock is for. ;)
5. A general 'net peeve: links formatted to open in a new window. I seldom see this with Firefox, but it's still quite annoying. If I wanted your link to spawn a new window, I'd right-click and do it myself.
6. I should add that bad grammar is obviously an annoyance. I've forced myself to relax enough to accept the occasional misspelled word or usage mistake, but the really egregious problems do strain my patience.
Any other peeves that y'all want to add to the list? :)
