(I did a flocked post about this yesterday, but I definitely want to spread the word as far and wide as possible!)
For those who haven't already heard, SixApart* is sponsoring a huge fundraising campaign for Donors Choose, an online foundation that funds grant proposals for K-12 public school teachers. Basically, a teacher posts a request for classroom materials or even field trips, and then website visitors can choose to donate money to her/his proposal. Once the funding total is met, the teacher gets the goods in exchange for sending thank-you notes. ;) I've already got a few ideas in the works, but I won't post them here due to privacy issues. Even so, this is open to teachers all over the U.S., so you can probably find some great requests in your area!
Until noon EST Monday, e-mail this address -- donorschoose@sixapart.com -- and they'll send you a code for a $30 gift certificate that you can use for any of the Donors Choose projects. Whee! This will soon segue into a larger fundraising campaign, but for now all you have to do is e-mail them at absolutely no cost to you, and some teacher will receive that money for a classroom project. Whee! You know I was all over that. ;)
If you want more details on how this part of the campaign works, check out
this post on Movable Type. You have to use a U.S. address to claim the GC, but
this comment has instructions on how non-Americans can get around that. (And yes, it'd be great if they could open this to students worldwide, but apparently
the laws are tricky about stuff like that.)
* Maybe it's just 6A's cynical attempt to rehabilitate their image, but I really don't give a damn if it means that kids will get stuff for school. I'm ALL for that!
