She's a naughty girl with a lovely smile.

I took Paces Ferry into Buckhead this afternoon. Such a gorgeous drive -- the two-lane winding road, the Hooch, lush greenery and trees so thick they block out the sun -- that never fails to make me passionately love Atlanta. I got a kick out of the house with a huge Mark Taylor for Governor yard sign... right next to the governor's mansion. ;) Am quite proud of myself for NOT buying anything at Border's, though I did get several yummy take-out dishes at Eatzi's. Buckhead is obnoxious in many ways, but I do like how the area around Lenox feels so much like a *city*. Same with most of the area ITP, of course, but in quite a different way.

I could also kick myself for not buying the new Maxim at Borders -- I'd mistakenly thought it was the August issue, and I didn't want to even touch it if I didn't have to. Alas. At least the fabulous syliasyliasylia has uploaded the BSG fashion shoot here.

SO MUCH PRETTY. Everyone looked great, and I've been dying for a photo shoot like that (one of my complaints about the October delay is that BSG's current buzz would've meant lots of press coverage, but now it'll be buried with all the other shows premiering in the next month. Grr.) The men look fabulous, of course, and I was thrilled to see so much of Michael looking so goddamned hot. Putting him in a shot with Tricia and Grace made me think, "Hmm, a hint that he's... A CYLON?!?" Okay, yeah, I know the placements are random and mean absolutely nothing, but it did make me giggle. Tahmoh? Guh. Jamie? Guh squared. James and especially Tricia looked gorgeous in their shot -- that hair and outfit suit her so beautifully, even more than the barely-there dresses from S1.

I also laughed at how, contrary to the show's costuming, Katee has on far less than the other women. ;) Bless her, she had the least amount of luck with the stylist and photographer. The outfit was odd and not my taste at all, but to be fair, it's apparently quite "fashion forward" -- Laura did some similar stuff on last week's Project Runway (Pic courtesy of this great PR recap.) Katee's a tricky one when it comes to photo shoots like this. Her natural face is so unconventionally beautiful and quirky; she's one of the few people alive who look much better without lots of styling. Her angular face and generous eyes and mouth come across as almost too harsh in pics like these. Same thing with the hair. I really liked her long hair in S2, but (to me) it does look much better when it's loose around her face. Speaking... one thing that I adored about yesterday's cutepilotsomg pic is how much she looks like early S1 Kara. I've adored *all* her different looks -- Kara's my girl, after all -- but seeing that made me grin. :)

Was reading the EW review of Ryan Gosling's new movie, Half Nelson, and while I'm sure it's marvelous, all the comments about him "caring about his kids with the fervor of a valiant inner-city educator" made me grin and roll my eyes. Same thing with Matthew Perry's TNT movie last weekend -- which I really did like in spite of the same cliches, mostly because his students looked exactly like the ones I've taught for the past eight years. Despite the geographical location, my school would qualify as "inner-city", but the archetype of the teacher out to change the world just rubs me the wrong way. We do try to reach these kids and inspire them, but those movies still feel so far removed from what it's really like. Then again, I suppose they do make for better TV. ;)

I haven't always wanted to be a teacher; to be honest, I only chose it my sophomore year of uni because I liked the idea of having a job when I graduated! Good thing that I discovered how much I love it, huh? ;) Growing up, I really wanted to be an architect... until I realized that engineering was perhaps even more important than just designing. As a kid, I used to spend hours obsessively looking at Dad's blueprints (he's an A/C contractor) and designing my own homes and skyscrapers on graph paper -- but my utter lack of engineering aptitude meant that all those pretty buildings would've collapsed. Yesterday I stumbled upon Wikipedia's Architecture portal, and omigod, so much fun! Seriously, I could spend *hours* reading every single page there. I especially love Bauhaus, though I have no idea why. I'm far from an expert (hi, biftec!), but learning about all the different movements and techniques is really fascinating.

So, I limit my craftsiness to knitting. I'm nearly done with a satchel for a friend -- just have to finish the flap and make the strap, then felt it. Those things make great presents because they can be knit up in a weekend. The colors are darker than in this photo, but I can't seem to get my digicam to color-correct.

And here's an update on the baby blanket for my future niece or nephew! The pattern called for merino wool, but which new mom wants to hand-wash a blanket? So I substituted with 100% cotton yarns from Elann. The colors aren't as cute and vibrant, but hey, machine washable. :)

I recently got a huge shipment from Knitpicks, and yesterday I was SO tempted to go by my LYS for kneedles so that I could start those projects, but I already have way too many half-finished things that need attention. Alas. Being logical kinda sucks sometimes.

Finally, I was listening to Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish again today, and it reminded me of how that's one of my all-time favorite albums. Yes, I'm a sucker for mid-90's Britpop. Damon Albarn is such a jackass, but the bastard is incredibly talented. And very, very pretty. I uploaded most of the album to SendSpace.

1. For Tomorrow
Immediately sets up the album's theme of vague nihilism mixed with confusion at the modern world -- and yeah, I think Damon intends it to be that pretentious. ;) That said, it's just a damn cool song. So many great lines, especially the "Emperor's Gate" interlude near the end. LOVE.

2. Advert
Odd but fun in a very London-ish way; I first bought the album while living there for a year during college, and it just felt so goofishly perfect for me back then.

5. Star Shaped
So damn cheerful, even if the lyrics are kinda silly and pre-emo. ;)

6. Blue Jeans
One of my all-time favorite songs. It's so very lovely, but the melancholy gets under my skin. I like to call it "my zen song". ;)

7. Chemical World
Ah, global warming. Gotta love GenX post-grunge social commentary. *g*

8. Intermission
One of our first glimpses of Art School Damon. ;) I adore how it starts with that simple piano, then eventually devolves into total cacophany. Plus, no words!

10. Oily Water
Very odd melody and arrangement, but in a quirky-cool way.

13. Coping
Absolutely *perfect* for shouting along on the drive home from a crappy day at work.

15. Popscene
I used to listen to this in a repeat-loop when I was in grad school. I still love how it bears more than a passing resemblance to the BTVS theme song. ;)

And finally... after watching way too much Good Eats lately, the vague Alton-CKR resemblance is making me want someone to write Leoben with his own cooking show.
