Another long post tonight, folks!
1. We've already established that Jack Bristow and Jack Bauer is a match made in alpha male heaven. After rewatching tonight's Doctor Who, I've found another dream TV partnership: Laura Roslin and Harriet Jones. They would literally rule the worlds while ensuring that everyone has a nice cuppa. It would be lovely.
2. Thanks for the
drabble challenges last night! I've already written three: Adama's mustache, Kara & Laura having lunch, and Veronica's blog. I hope to write a few more tonight.
3.
According to EntWkly, my beloved Grant Lee Phillips will be performing in the season finale of Gilmore Girls, along with Neil Young, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, the Sparks, and ... Mary-Lynn Rajskub (aka Chloe, My Role Model for Life.) How fucking cool is that? I've heard some iffy stuff about the finale, but that lineup has ensured I will keep it on my TiVo for years to come. Note: that article has some non-music-related spoilers.
4. The above made me want to share some mp3s, so here are a few downloads for y'all.
-- Grant Lee Phillips,
"Sing Along" and
"Arousing Thunder" (live): The imagery-rich historical lyrics in the first have always reminded me of '30s WPA murals and worldiness; plus, it's just so rollicking and awesome. And lately it reminds me of Prison Break. Yes, my song-associations are odd! The second is lovely in a very different way, and among other things makes me want to write some Kara/Lee academy hijinx. ;)
-- Supergrass,
"Late in the Day": Though I'm a fic chick and an English major, I've always been more into the music itself -- give me a good melody with texture and unusual instrumentation, and I'm in heaven. This one has great lyrics (that also make me want to write academy hijinx ;), but I just love the *feel* of this song, especially that last verse that starts at 3:45.
-- Blur,
"Clover Over Dover" and
"Girls & Boys": The first hits all my oddness kinks; how can you not love a cheerful song about suicide that features a harpsichord? And on a completely different note, the second one is so damn hilarious, with all the winking/snarky nods to tropical vacation hedonism and bisexuality?
-- Paul Oakenfold,
"Ready Steady Go": Electronica-lite, and sounds as if it was written for a car commercial; hell, I'm surprised it didn't show up in one until last year. I just LOVE turning this up full-blast on the freeway, and it makes me want to do a Buffy/Faith fighting vid. (Hey, vidders? Feel free to run with that idea.)
-- Ash,
"Girl from Mars":
dtissagirl made a cute Veronica Mars icon with this title. ;) The song itself has nothing to do with VM, but it's so boppy and poppy and fun.
-- Crowded House,
"Weather with You": One of my all-time favorites. I used to vastly prefer the live recordings, where Neil and the gang go improv-crazy, but the album version is just so, SO lovely... and the little bridge at 1:05 is sublime. This song is the nexus of my addiction to road trip fic.
5. Today I planned to take my fabulous new camera to the Atlanta Botanical Garden... until I remembered that the Dogwood Festival starts today. No way in hell am I going to brave that crowd, even for some pretty flowers. So I headed to the
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, a bit of wilderness in the middle of the big city, and only ten minutes from my front door. Yay! I tried to hike, but I wussed out at the first sight of a very steep trail. Still, I took some photos that you can see
here. Instead of doing a picspam, I annotated them -- scroll down on each page to see my comments and explanation. :)
