Binge drinking and school supplies book swap.

Tonight's binge drinking episode of 30 Days is particularly timely, since right now I'm reading Smashed, a memoir by a young woman who pretty much drank her way through high school and college. The students on the docu are boasting about getting shitfaced at least four nights a week. Lovely. My parents never raised me to be puritanical -- Dad ( Read more... )

Excellent! And the HP swag is totally fine, too. :) Will put the book in the mail this weekend.

Or maybe it's the whole mentality where getting totally trashed is seen as a "cool" thing

It's that that gets me. My dad was born in Germany...I grew up similar to you, and I drink but not to extremes. The degree of it...shocks me especially after I dated my ex who took pictures of his fraternity brothers drinking whole bottles of alcohol and throwing up in garbage cans. He even made himself throw up on purpose to avoid hangovers. That just isn't the scene for me...and I agree...maybe it makes me judgmental but I think people who do that kind of thing are weak.

I hear ya. I can vaguely understand (and loathe) binge drinking, but what gets me is how so many kids seem to fetishize it. Like they're cooler because they drink to the point of passing out every night. I'm not going to condemn them for drinking -- alcohol in moderation (or even drinking to get drunk as long as you're not to the point of blacking out) is totally fine by me -- but what the hell is up with such EXCESS?

I like...books, in general, and any that go unclaimed I would like :) I'll most likely send stuff anyway, because I was in that position as a kid and we didn't have people donating, so our teacher had to pay out of her own pocket. My email is daphyn@daphyn.com :) I happen to have a TON of stickers that I bought with the intention of decorating my dresser, but I changed my mind.

I've never understood excessive drinking, myself. Once in a long while I'll have a glass of wine, but I usually regret it. (I must admit that my stance on drinking has changed somewhat drastically since my father came out as an alcoholic last year, but I've never been into heavy drinking anyway.)

Thanks so much for the supplies offer! I'll email you this afternoon.

As for drinking... I do have tons of sympathy for alcoholics, because god knows I have my own addictions. What bothers me is the whole college/youth subculture I described in my post above -- where it's considered "cool" to get totally TRASHED all the time, and how many of the kids see nothing at all wrong with it.

That bothers me as well. My sister (who's only 18) and her friends were getting drunk every weekend for quite some time. And she'd go see her boyfriend (who lives across the state) and they'd spend the whole time drunk. And I know people who do nothing else...and they usually either stop or I stop talking to them, because someone who's that young who's drunk NONSTOP isn't someone I want to really spend much time with :( I've lost more than a few friends that way.

Right. I'm fine with drinking. I just don't *get* that whole culture where drinking to the point of passing out is something they're PROUD of.
