The sun is shining and I have my decision hat on.
I'm meant to have gone to London today, but will have to prioritize the fundamentals here... tricksy times ahead.
My trip to Birmingham this week turned out was very much worth the effort and expenditure as I had a lovely time at Funny Women. I feel buoyed up by the response I got from crowd and comedians alike. I have to say, the calibre of entrants on this occasion was particularly strong, and I would not be surprised if a couple made their way to the semi-finals. I'm doing a disservice to the ladies by only mentioning the likes of Leanne Mckie, Naomi Paul, Rachel Sambrooks, Hannah Silvester and Harriet Dyer for excellent stand-up, plus Louise Stokes, whose character Ros was really funny (ugh though!) and Lorna Mehan's wonderful poetry.
I think the Funny Women judges will be hard-pressed to pick apart the acts, though I think the general consensus from anyone in the room is that Sami and Tilly were brilliant and if they don't get through we will all feel a bit odd. In fact,we were so impressed we booked them! They're a musical act whose sweet and innocent look belies their wordly-wise take on the world, which they express through the medium of song parodies! Very slick, very professional.
When I say a couple could get through to the semis, I am crossing fingers for myself too, though the competition was a bit fierce (not actually fierce, though. Everyone was too lovely and complimentary to each other for it ever to be literally fierce. The compere was Barbara Nice, who was very nice indeed! She really knows how to make the most of the room.
And what a room - for those of you who don't know The Rainbow, a couple of years ago it didn't even have a roof. They've got one now, but a lick of paint and spot of fumigation wouldn't go amiss. Still - good for the rock n'roll ambiance.
We won't find out who has got through until September, so shall be concentrating on other things for a bit. Like those fundamentals...
