Ritsu paced frantically, terribly uncomfortable in his new suit. What if dinner was a bad idea? What if Mitsuru hated Italian food? What if she thought a Christmas date was too cliché?
Ritsu’s panic was interrupted by the ringing door bell. She was here! What if he said something stupid? He opened the door nervously. Mitsuru stood there, a friendly smile on her face. (She was so pretty. He didn’t deserve her.)
“Merry Christmas,” she chirped. She was carrying a package, which she handed to him.
She got him a present! He hadn’t gotten her anything! What kind of terrible person was he?! Ritsu pulled at the stiff collar of his suit, and tried not to think about how much he missed his women’s kimono. “I… I didn’t get you anything. I’m so sorry!”
Mitsuru shook her head. “That’s fine. Just open your present.”
Ritsu opened the box and pulled out a sparkling evening gown. “This… is for me?”
Mitsuru looked at the floor. “I thought you might like to wear it tonight,” she said shyly.
“Then… you don’t mind that…” Ritsu trailed off.
“I want you to be happy tonight,” Mitsuru said gently. She smiled. “You should get changed.”
“Right!” Ritsu dashed into the bedroom, and emerged a few minutes later, wearing the dress. He kept his eyes on the floor. “Do… I look all right?”
“You look beautiful, Ritsu-san.” Mitsuru stepped towards to the young man, pulled him close, and kissed him softly.
Kissing Mitsuru was always so wonderful, Ritsu thought. Mitsuru was wonderful in general; Ritsu didn’t deserve her… but she wanted him.
Mitsuru pulled away reluctantly. “We’ll be late if we don’t hurry.”
Ritsu panicked. “Ah, you’re right!” He rushed out the door.
Mitsuru followed, more slowly. “You’re a beautiful person,” she whispered. “Inside and out.”
