haha, yes it does solve that living situation problem!

i got my older cat, pandora, declawed when she was a few months old. prices can vary all over the place, from as low as $50 to over $200. it all depends on the vet and which type of declawing surgery they do. the least painful method is the laser declaw, which is what the vet used to do pandora's surgery. it's less traumatic and requires less time at the vet's office. to think of it in human terms, declawing is like cutting off your fingers at the last joint. as much as i don't want to put lluvy through something like that, if it means the difference between keeping her or finding her a new home, i'd much rather spend the money to drive to PA to have her surgery done correctly by the trusted family vet than to be saying goodbye to my sweet girl.

i remember when pandora had her surgery, she spent one night at the vet's office and came back the next day. she didn't seem to be in much pain, and the vet told me that within hours after the surgery, the cat was playing in her cage with all sorts of toys! there was one point where she was definitely in pain, and her paws were slightly swollen, but after a warm compress was pressed to her feet and many scritches, she seemed to be just fine.

soft paws can definitely be a hassle, unless you're lucky enough to have one very laidback kitty! it requires filing down the nails then essentially gluing the plastic caps on, and you have to do it every few weeks or when/if one of the caps falls off. i can see why eliot would want to have your kitty declawed - his hands are his livelihood! my recommendation would be to get a kitty and wait until she's four or five months old before having the surgery, which is the youngest age at which most vets will do the surgery. by then you'd be able to tell if she's super-laidback and could stand you putting soft paws on/trimming her nails to a shorter length or if she's like lluvy and insists on scratching anything and everything!

i'll definitely let you know how it goes for lluvy, since the procedure can be a different experience for different kitties! i'm sure she won't be pleased to go for a car ride, but it means she gets to stay with me!
