A long time ago [ a 'long time' being nine months ] I asked what Mama's an' Papa's are 'sposed to be like, an' a lot of people said they were supposed to be nice and talk nice an' everythin'. Since there's lots of new people an' it's been a while, I thought I'd ask again!

What are Mama's and Papa's 'sposed to be like?

[oh. this is just the saddest thing. it gives her pause. she knows what parents should be like...but she can't vouch for hers being like that. not her father. and her mother...]

Brave. They should be brave, and fiercely protective of their children. And they should be understanding, too, and accepting and unashamed of what their children are - and love them, above all.

Everyone makes 'em sound completely different than they are in fairy tales.

What are they like in fairy tales? Absent?

Mean. They abandon the kids in the woods or cook 'em in pots or make 'em work like slaves.

Ahh. Because most fairy tales are about the journey to self-discovery that every child or young adult goes through. It's more complicated, though.

There are some parents who aren't very good, but most parents wouldn't cook their children, or...do any of the above.

Why can't the kids do that an' still have nice parents?
