What are some important things to learn from this?
Never do something illegal (unless absolutely necessary) if you don't know the area well enough to be sure you can get away as fast and as easily as possible to avoid arrest. Having only one laborious exit and being there for the first time does not fit this criteria.
Never do something illegal (unless absolutely necessary) if you are the only one or ones in the area at that time of night who could have potentially committed it. Being the only dirty kids riding bikes at three in the morning in an area in which the only other people are cops was not the best idea.
Never do anything illegal (unless absolutely necessary) if there is a potential of being seen by other people who value property differently than you. Everyone is a cop. In a building with a thousand eyes, they only have to drowsily open one and you're caught. We have no idea of knowing exactly who or when we were seen because anyone could have looked out their window in the dark without us knowing until we got to the bottom.
