Doctor Who, Doctor Who, Doctor Who!

The special was better than I expected! Which is a terrible thing to say, I feel like, but I was terribly, terribly worried about its epicness. Only I'd forgotten it was Moffat instead of Rusty running the show, and Moffat's usually been a lot quieter and lighter about the Time War, and this was so hopeful. I've seen other people commenting again "The Doctor doesn't even like his people! What's the big deal?!" but, um, not having to bear the weight of your own people's genocide has to count for something, yes? And the anniversary specials have always been about Gallifrey and the Doctor's past.

Billie Piper was amazing as the Bad Wolf Moment ("no more," the last one, hee!), snark is always required when multiple Doctors appear in the room, Ian was governor of Coal Hill School but where the devil was Barbara (and when did Clara get her teaching certification??), and, yes, I squeed and bounced a lot when Tom Baker showed up at the end.

The bit in the TARDISes, when all the Doctors showed up to help save the day--I actually teared up a bit there. I feel really removed from the fannishness this year, more removed than I have in probably about two decades, which is saddening--I mean, this is Doctor Who, this is my first fandom, you know, this is the fandom I've been in from birth--but that moment, I was finding it again.

So, you know, it makes me happy.

Adventure in Space & Time was interesting with the tension between a show that relies upon its adaptability and changeability and a main character--William Hartnell--mourning those changes throughout, from Carole Ann Ford's leaving through Verity's leaving through his own forced stepping down. I have no idea how close any of that was to the reality of the time, but it was interesting. (And yes, I also teared up when Matt Smith showed up at the very end, fiddling with the same controls. GO AHEAD, PLAY THOSE EMOTIONAL HEARTSTRINGS, I'm fine. *sniff*)

As for Peter Davison's Five(ish) Doctors reboot? SO ADORABLE. They did a really fantastic job of balancing what could have been something sad and pathetic--my embarrassment squick never *quite* went off, which was a good sign--with something sweet and charming. And OMG the snarking from the three of them together, and with McGann ("who wants to do television anyway?" "Oh shut up").

Basically, I <3 all my Doctors.

dw, frabjous days, transitioning, intellectual wankery
