Speaking of awesome women

Adderly, people. Canadian tv show from the latter half of the 1980s. I have to picspam, if only because everyone needs to know how awesome Mona is.

Okay, first, Adderly himself. V.H. was a top I.S.I. operative who had an unfortunate run-in with some bad guys, leading to the loss of his hand. He's either too good to lose, or he just refuses to resign, so they've stuck him with Miscellaneous Affairs. It's basically like that "Mission: Improbable" game they used to play on "Whose Line is it Anyway?" Adderly's missions, should he choose to accept them, are utterly ridiculous (seriously, there was one where he had to go buy groceries), but he always ends up discovering something Terrible Afoot and saving the day and never getting the credit because everybody thinks he's just trying to get back to Europe. (That's a sneak peek of Mona in the back there. Hi, Mona!)

(Where, by the way, Communist Russians speak with very proper English accents. That's how you know they're communists, yo.)

But I digress. This is Melville Greenspan, the nominal head of Misc. Affairs. Melville is only slightly more redeeming as a character than Frank Burns. And that only happens about twice throughout the entire run of the show.

But who cares about these guys? Despite all the corniness--and the show really is 1980s corny--I watch it for Mona Ellerby.

Mona's the secretary. She sometimes wears really big plastic-framed 1980s glasses.

She reads spy novels because she gets really bored at work and dreams of a life full of excitement.

She and Adderly are really good friends.

(This really is totally platonic. He was trying to tickle her age out of her on her birthday. Melville enters and is just like, "Adderly, put Mona down.")

Mona also KICKS ASS.

(Dude, they're crappy low-quality DVDs, I did the best I could, alright?)

And this is why Mona is awesome. She's bored, she's underpaid, she's underappreciated--no, okay, Adderly really appreciates what she does--she works in a crummy basement office and gets colds and has to call the plumbers because there's a busted pipe in Greenspan's office, but she also reads spy novels and she digs up all kinds of info without using official channels because they typically don't have access to those channels, and she's adorable, and if you dick with her or her people she will take you down like a pile of bricks. She calls Melville Mr. Greenspan and sir, and she tells Adderly to play nice with Melville, and she's smart and she thinks fast, and she has an awesome laugh and terrible glasses (and sometimes a really terrible winter hat). And I watch an episode when I'm wandering around doing other stuff, and she just brightens my day a little.

So there you have it. MONA ROCKS. The end.

dorkface, canadians rock, geeeeeek
