Hey, snow! GO AWAY.

Jan 02, 2010 15:16

I have friends driving in from out of town this evening. The roads are still not recovered from the massive storm we had at Christmas. And now it's falling steadily again. Screw you, snow!

Hmph.

Fic what I wrote last year, in some rough form of chronological order of publishing date:

February:
Brush Up Your Shakespeare (SG-1, original!team)

March:
some bits and bobs, from prompts that I don't think I ever finished writing...bad me (Dalziel & Pascoe books by Reginald Hill and Man from UNCLE).

April:
Just a Little Confused (NCIS, for the lgbtfest ficathon)
The Inestimable Value of a Good Pair of Shoes (DW, Harry Sullivan may be an imbecile but we love him dearly for it, for the tardis_gen ficathon)

May:
A Funny Kommandant (Hogan's Heroes, also for the lgbtfest ficathon)

June:
Three Time Travelers in a Boat (DW, for the EDA ficathon on henriettastreet)
Somebody Else's Conventional (DW, for same ficathon)

July:
Even the Smallest Ripple (DW, EDAs)
A Pleasant Road (SG-1, mostly Cam and Teal'c)

August:
a 5 things prompt (SG-1, 5 things left in Sam's luggage when she went to Atlantis)

September:
Choose Your Own Theft (Leverage/many other fandoms, PARKER RULES)

November:
another 5 things prompt (SG-1, 5 times Daniel was scary)
Sunshine for Your Love (DW, Polly/Martha for the dw_femslash ficathon)
Thick-Skinned (I-man, Our Heroes Three for the hot_donuts ficathon)

December:
Of Ogrons and Butterflies (DW, Martha and Benny)
day in the life (DW, Fitz-at-Torchwood)
Each Other (Man from UNCLE, for the Down the Chimney ficathon on muncle)
The full weight of our burdens (Dalziel & Pascoe books by Reginald Hill, for Yuletide)

And the two audio fics I read:
Twenty True Stories (DW, written by kindkit)
In Dulce Jubilo (SG-1, written by troyswann)

Leitmotif of the year?

Unlikely meetings, I'd say. And journeys. There always have to be journeys.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

About what I'd hoped. I like being able to average at least one a month, though the first few moths of the year were very slow for me it looks like (I was also kinda hella busy with RL things at that time). I haven't managed more than that since before grad school. And in grad school I'm pretty sure it was considerably less.

Where did you publish/archive your stories?

Mostly my LJ or whatever comm's ficathon I was writing for, Dreamwidth, Teaspoon for the Who fics, and my Yuletide fic on AO3.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2009?

Fitz/Anji. Never would have thought it. (If Ace, Polly, or Matha had been in there somewhere, it would have been far more likely...) Also, I'm shocked that I wrote Tony/Tim from NCIS because, well, I've never bothered to write NCIS fic before and I wouldn't have expected to start with that of all pairings.

What’s your favorite story this year?

Oh, grief, I don't know. Both the LGBT fics were hard, and I'm sort of strangely proud of them, and there's Cam's and Teal'c's Epic Bromance Road Trip, and Parker's crossovers of awesomeness, and Harry's shoes. Very difficult to choose from those, you know.

Your most popular story?

Probably "Choose Your Own Theft." It's got a little something for everybody, really. Second was probably "Inestimable Value." Clearly, I should stick to the humor.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?

They all are! Ha. I'm slightly disappointed there weren't more comments on "The full weight of our burdens," but not particularly surprised; the same for the MUNCLE fic. (The others with few comments I think deserved few comments, so I don't consider them under-appreciated.)

Story that could have been better?

Other than all of them?...no, actually, I honestly think they all could have been better. Either I ran out of time for polishing/re-drafting, or I should have had more or fewer scenes, or I should have just started all over again.

Sexiest story?

Oh, people. I don't do sex. Characters are complicated enough as it is. "Sunshine for Your Love" probably, though "Each Other" does involve a nearly-nekkid Illya and suggestive banter with Napoleon.

Most fun story?

"Choose Your Own Theft," definitely. Or, wait, "Inestimable Value." They were both pretty sort of marvelous to write.

Story with single sweetest moment?

The entirety of "Three Time Travelers in a Boat" is really quite ridiculously sweet.

The story that made you cry?

Other than from sheer frustration? Nah, none of them made me cry. Though "A Funny Kommandant" kept me up half the night when I first got the idea, feverishly writing it all down.

"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for me" story:

...Nope, not this year. I didn't write Jack Harkness fic, y'see. (Maybe that should be my New Year's resolution for this year: actually write the damned Fitz/Jack Epic Vegas Caper. Somehow, I don't think it will happen. Unless I have crack fed to me intravenously for two days straight.)

Story that shifted my own perception of the characters:

They all do, silly, else what would be the point of writing them? I found more sympathy for Klink than I ever would have expected, even as he continued to be an unreliable and deceitful narrator; I properly wrote loads of Anji for the first time truly ever as I've always been afraid of fucking her up (next, I might even try to write Compassion!...no, probably not); and I wrote more of Teal'c too, because the older I get, the more his awesomeness shines through.

Hardest story to write?

The majority of them were hard to write, and had drafts scrapped, and blah. "Somebody Else's Conventional" and "Just a Little Confused" were probably harder than most, though, even if "Just a Little Confused" started out ridiculously bright and breezy and wrote its own first draft in approximately one half-hour.

Easiest story to write?

"The Inestimable Value of a Good Pair of Shoes." As soon as I got the prompt I knew exactly what I was going to do. I think I wrote the handwritten draft in one plane ride between Kansas City and Chicago. It was beautiful.

Most overdue story?

NONE, huzzah. Okay, one or two might have been a day or two late, but in the one case they weren’t being posted yet anyway, in another we had a blanket extension, and in the other it was actually my second fic for the ficathon, and the first one I’d put up bang on time.

Did you take any writing risks this year?

It depends what you mean by risk. I wrote in some fandoms I'd never written in before; I actually wrote a piece of straight historical fic and did not immediately toss it out for being too historically wanky and/or completely inaccurate ("Even the Smallest Ripple"), I bloody wrote Fitz/Anji. But no, I don't really think I took any strong risks, and maybe I should have.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?
Keep writing. Keep writing multiple fandoms. Keep betaing, since I'm fairly decent at it and I like to help other people. Read more audio fic, as it's fun and another way to give fannish gifts. And I think I'll try to get at least the "good" fic posted to AO3 since I have the account now and I haven't used ff.net in, oh, three or four years and it's nice to have somewhere other than LJ where I can stash all my fic in one easily searchable location. (Also, may I just say I GET TO BE ACES AGAIN. I haven't been aces, properly, since, well, ff.net I think.)
