welcome to the sound of 1984

I'm not cutting this, and you can be offended if you want, but if you're offended by me saying that people's constitutional rights shouldn't be violated, then I don't even know what to say.

I'm not from Minneapolis/St. Paul, and have not been there except to visit their lovely airport en route from Indianapolis to Edmonton and back.

I do need to react to what's going on there, though. Apparently, in preparation for the Republican National Convention, the local police and sheriff's department have been cracking down on organizations likely to protest, incuding the RNC Welcoming Committee and Food Not Bombs, accusing them of everything from fire code violations to conspiracy to riot.

The RNC Welcoming Committee was, and is, planning to protest the RNC. They have that right.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

They've drawn weapons on people who were watching a movie and sharing food, stolen property (including notes, etc.) from reporters, searched premises despite being told repeatedly that the people involved did not consent to be searched and there wasn't a search warrant, refused to read the warrant in cases where it actually did exist. Guys, we have laws in this country, they're meant to be followed. We have the fucking constitution, okay, and constitutional rights that aren't supposed to be violated.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Guys, I became an American citizen less than a month ago. I get a lot of shit about it here, but I am fucking proud of that country, okay? It's my home. I think the constitution is a pretty fucking awesome piece of paper. I am fucking proud to be American, but...

What the fuck is going on? What the fuck? This sort of shit is not okay.

Found out about this from here. Follow the links on the right-hand side to try and get the full story.
