Eden liked the snow, as a rule. It was a pain for the pets and Origami still seemed to find it pretty confounding, but for her, it was nice, one of the few things she'd liked about where she grew up. She liked the sun, but it was nice to have some change in the seasons, even a mild one. Everything around here had been so confusing lately, up and ( Read more... )

And so another snow came. Gideon had actually forgotten it was December before he woke up to see his hut looked like something out of a fucking cartoon. What was really sad, what said how damn long he'd be on the island, really, was that he just went with it. What else could he do?

He'd headed to the Compound, bundled up in one of the many lame sweaters he had now, since there wasn't all that much to do in his hut besides stare at the pink walls. He had his own plan of finding shit to watch so he didn't have to go out for a while. Seeing Eden there was unexpected but not unwelcome.

"Find anything good?" he asked, squatting down next to her so he could take a look at what was being offered. He had a feeling he was going to regret not bringing at least one of his own up.

"You didn't bring something?" Eden asked and clucked her tongue, mock-chastising. "Nothing much here. Nothing appalling, but nothing I'm in the mood for either. You have something in mind?" She hoped for something familiar, one of those movies she already knew well but could always watch again, but she supposed she would probably wind up settling for 'not horrifyingly bad.' It was unsurprising to see Gideon here, but she was pleased nonetheless; this kind of thing was always more fun with him.

"I was hoping for some new shit," he said, already scanning the titles. There was no fucking way he was going to trudge back to his hut now, so what was being offered was it, really. "Man, there's a lot of Christmas specials here."

At least it wasn't all cartoons. It could've been worse.

"God, I know." Eden rolled her eyes. "I didn't know there were so many." Some of them were old standbys, things she'd watched every year as a kid, but others, she didn't think she'd ever heard of. After her time, maybe, or long before it or from some other reality - it was always tough to tell around here. "This place really gets into the holiday spirit."

"I couldn't tell," he said dryly, casting a sidelong glance toward the rec room. He was pretty sure there was more tinsel in the area than he'd ever fucking seen in his life. "This place definitely makes it hard to forget what month it is."

"July, right?" Eden huffed out a laugh, shaking her head. The really sad thing was, even though it was almost painfully over-the-top, it was still better than any Christmas she'd had growing up. "God, I can't believe this is my fourth winter here. How did that happen?"

"I ask myself the same fucking thing all the time. And don't fucking tempt this place," he snorted. Multiple months of snow would be even more of a pain in the ass. "Next we know, we'll have to deal with a year of this shit. And if we're all supposed to be stuck here, I want it to at least be warm."

"If I've tempted the fates," teased Eden, "I'll find all the blankets this place is hiding and bring them to you. Of course, you may have to deal with everyone banging down your door to take them back, but you'll be warm." She doubted it would ever get to that particular point, but who knew here? Nothing was exactly certain in a place like this, though she often forgot that.

"They can't go after me if you aren't caught," he pointed out. He figured that ought to be obvious. "I know that wasn't your specialty back home, but I bet you could fucking manage it, if you tried. Not that I'm telling you to."

Eden laughed. "Yeah, well," she said, "what I did required a little less finesse, but I could do it. Easy. Not that you're telling me to, no." It was nice, though, however joking, to imagine she'd get a next year and that she would see another Christmas. She wasn't going to take any of it for granted, but she could hope.

"And I remember now why we fucking get along," he snorted. He pulled out a movie, looking at the title on the can. He showed Eden it. "It's A Wonderful Life. At least it's giving the classics."

"Oh, good," Eden said, reaching for it with a wistful little sigh. "I love that one. See, there's something good about this place being in a holiday spirit." If nothing else, there were some really good Christmas movies out there, as long as you didn't mind a little sap. Eden didn't, in small doses.

"I wouldn't call this a favorite," he said, a touch of grumpiness in his voice. He had a feeling he wasn't going to get any normal movies for the entire month, which sucked. "But I guess it's fucking better than the cartoon movies, at least. "But I guess it's alright. For a holiday movie."

"Hey, some of those holiday movies are pretty good," Eden said, grinning. "Maybe not cinematographic masterpieces, most of them, but... cozy." She could do with the comfort of those things, the suggestion of peace and love and the ability to get home every time. It was difficult to believe that sometimes; the years had made her less certain, not more, unable to become complacent when the longer she stayed, the closer she felt she must come to death.

"I didn't say they weren't," he reminded. They just weren't as good as some of the other shit he watched. "I'm going to take a guess you're the kind that watches some of these each year?"

Maybe he was too. But only because there were times when nothing was on.

"If I can find them," Eden said, a tiny bit defensive, though it was mostly in play. It wasn't as if it had ever been some kind of grand tradition. She'd watched them as a kid simply because they had been on every year and she had liked the regularity of it and the spirit, the suggestion of warmth and family which seemed so distant from her own life back then. "You gonna watch with me?"
