The New Stargate???
Alright so there has been a lot of hubbub of the new stargate show. I must say that I tried not to read any of it, because most of it was here-say and I just waited for the premiere before I started making any judgments.
I will admit when I first watched Stargate Atlantis I was thought it was incredibly boring. It was just to slow building. I stuck with it and by the end of the season I was hooked. Unfortunately, I do not think Stargate Universe will be like that.

The review:
Stargate has always been about going through the gate to journey to new worlds. SGU takes place on a ship and they have barely used the gate in the first 10 episodes. The show in and of itself focuses more on drama (like a mix between Beverly Hills 90210 and BSG) than on action. The show is serial rather than episodic, which in my personal opinion could be a good thing, if they play it right. A thing I do like is that they have good cast; from Newbie actors to SciFi newbies. What I do not like is that there is so much wheelin-and-dealin going in. I know it’s suppose to be suspenseful and dramatic, but there is so many secrets. It’s the way the show is directed and the way the story is told is just off. For example in the premiere the story was told in a jumble. There was flashbacks and flashaheads. I bet it was confusing for those not familiar to the SG world.
They must be doing something right because from checking the stats they have a lot of viewers, and have attracted a new audience, but to me it just doesn’t seem like it’s really part of the Stargate Universe, even though it is called that. Critics always spoke of how Stargate shows would find a major problem (alien invasion, or sun exploding) and great minds would get together and hash it out, and after lots of offbeat humor and brainstorming save the day. Yet in SGU the crews is totally unprepared for this, and are suppose to be “normal” people, but when they are faced with major problems they miraculously find a way out. It’s just that in this time it isn’t really believable.
The first half of the first season ended in the beginning of December but won’t return til April. I feel like that kind of gap would just make the show lose the momentum it’s gaining.
The bottom line is I’m really not impressed, but like a true fan to all that is Stargate, I will really, really, try to make it through the whole first season and then decide If I am dumping it. Thankfully nothing else has been on TV during that time, so I may actually watch the rest of the episodes.
