Yu-Gi-Oh GX

Well, the new series is out, and I've finally gotten 'round to a new entry. (Don't expect it to happen again any time soon.)

I just thought I'd register a few thoughts about Yu-Gi-Oh GX, which airs at 5:00 P.M. on Cartoon Network Mon.-Fri. and also at 10:30 P.M. Mon.-Thurs. (taking the place of uncut DBZ, which has been bumped back to Toonami on Saturdays). So far, the first three episodes have been shown, and so far it's looking good.

The first episode, since I saw the original in subtitled Japanese, betrayed many typical 4Kids alterations. As I told Sir Mocha, they just couldn't resist writing in their own crap dialogue. But nonetheless, it turned out to be a fairly enjoyable episode to watch.

The second episode was better. The third was awesome and hilarious, and in that 4Kids even gave up trying to cut romance out of the series and let Asuka/Alexis's interest in Jaden bypass their censorship meatgrinder.

General overview: the new series is awesome. Thus far, the duels are short and sweet, rather than drawn-out and filled with inane ranting as in Battle City of the original Yu-Gi-Oh, and the characters, even through the blurred lense of 4Kids dubbing, are cool characters--from Jaden to Alexis to Syrus to even Chumley (who is given only minimal screen time in these episodes, and is almost always in bed).

I have to complain, though. 4Kids cut out the funniest part of Episode 2. When Chumley first appears, his face is covered for an instant by an almost identical koala and Jaden and Syrus cry out, "KOALA?!" 4Kids ditched the koala joke. Now the koala picture is skipped over and Jaden and Syrus grab each other and scream for no apparent reason other than the fact that their roommate has a very large nose.

Well, that's all. 'Til next time...
