SGA, Torchwood... well, sci-fi tv

Discussing SGA S4 and TW S1 behind the tag. Spoiler-phobics (if there really are people who haven't seen all this years ago) beware! I won't be responsible for the shattering of your fragile little souls by the evil, evil spoliers if you take a look despite the warning. [/sarcasm]

So, to my own utter surprise, I find that I actually like SGA's 4th season. Not all of it, of course, episodes like "Missing" and "Trio" are utter tripe, especially because they focus on dumb-faced Dr. Keller, who's probably the most boring character I've ever seen in the Stargate universe, especially considering the mind-wretching fact that the PTB replaced Carson-bloody-Beckett with her, the most lovable character right after Zelenka. But I digress...

Anyway, I loved "Tabula Rasa" and action!Zelenka, as well as "Quarantine", the first episode in which Zelenka and Carter had any shared screen time and Zelenka got to save the day. Go, Radek! "Harmony", with the usual obnoxious kid as a plot device was utter shite, of course, but the rest was solid sci-fi, even if it doesn't really have the SGA feel to it. But again, I've lost that SGA-feel right after the end of Season 1, when they got back in touch with Earth again and the series lost its unique flair. It was good to see Bates again in "Outcasts", though. Sadly, as Sheppard gets older, he looks more and more like Sylvester Stallone, and in my book, that's definitely not a positive development.

So, Torchwood. "Countrycide" was, at least plot-wise, utter tripe. I liked to see Ianto out of his suit, though, even if, paradoxically, he looks older in casual clothes. What angered me most was the fact that the last few moments were wasted with Gwen whining about wanting to understand why a bunch of inbred troglodytes wanted to eat her (there's nothing to say about taste, now is it?), while the fact that Ianto got beaten up like nobody else got completely forgotten. C'mon, people, the poor lad must have had at least a couple of broken ribs, bruised kidneys, a concussion and whatnot, not to mention the psychological trauma of nearly gotten butchered, and nobody seemed to find it necessary to look after him? Instead we got implications of Gwen/Owen sex. *goes to the washroom to puke*

I wish RTD and his cronies had a little more inclination of consistency and characterisation. But no, of course in the next episode he'll be as good as new, serving coffee and cleaning up shit and feeding the frigging pterodactyl, while we'll be treated with more Gwen wangsting. Gah, I've come to hate that stupid cow! Especially after her "funny" little game at the beginning of this episode.
