Show Update

Last weekend was opening weekend. Everything got done, but most nights (mornings) for the past 3 weeks, I only got 3-4 hours sleep. My metabolism got so messed up that my beard quit growing! I don't recommend that much sleep deprivation. I can't begin to tell you how nice it is to get a decent night's sleep again.

The local fire marshall determined that pyrotechnics were not safe in the old wood frame theatre building, and I have to agree with him. We do the explosion effect with lights, sound, and a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher, and it looks pretty good. The audience is still startled, which is what is important. The positive side of this is that I now have two mortars, a firing device, and enough flash powder to make my next party/ritual a real "blast".

The hollow boar's head and trick vase look really good. I'm really happy with the suit of armor too. It's amazing what can be done with some lightweight cable and aquarium tubing! If I can figure out how to post pictures, I'll put some in a future entry.

I'm not happy with the overall show lighting. My director has an unnatural dislike of blue light, and she doesn't understand the importance of backlight. She also made me reduce the overall light level way below what I think is necessary. Everything looks flat and "warm", but she is happy. I was really very close to asking her to take my name out of the program because I don't feel that the lighting is representative of my skill and talent. The next time she asks me to light one of her shows, I'm going to set the condition that she allows me to make the color choices that I think are appropriate.
