This year we have an abundance of black and yellow garden spiders in our yard. Several times a week, Rose and I catch bugs to feed them. With our huge infestation of grasshoppers, all the spiders are getting really fat. It's amazing to watch the spiders eat. I may be nuts, but I think some of them have personalities. One always wraps its prey very tightly and starts draining the fluids immediately. The spider right next to it always has 2 or 3 bugs in its web because it likes to leave them wrapped up for a while before eating. This one also takes its time wrapping up its prey, often letting the bug struggle for a few minutes before moving in to wrap it up.
They both get fed pretty frequently, so I'm not sure how to explain their differing behavior. I'd almost say the one that takes its time enjoys letting its prey linger. I wonder if a scared bug tastes any different? I'm not about to munch any grasshoppers to find out!
