Zelda was late and, since it had been more than two weeks, she was beginning to think that perhaps, just perhaps, she was with child. She got the home pregnancy test herself, wanting to surprise Robert with the news, and dutifully followed the instructions. Positive! She was going to have a baby with her Robert

Chase stumbles into the apartment, kicking off his shoes and dropping his bag.

"Zelda?" he calls. "Honey? I'm back." He steps into the living room, he smiles. "I feel like a missed something-- Zelda?"

Zelda smiled, sweet and slow. "Robert, I am pregnant," she said, showing him the test.

[blondewombat]

"Pregnant?" Chase stills, pulling the test from her hands. He peers at it, eyes widening. "I--"

This was not at all

"Are you not happy?" she asked, face starting to fall.

[blondewombat]

"What? No! I--" Chase sighs. "I'm a little stunned, is all. I was expecting dinner when I came home. Not a baby."

He breaks out into a wide grin, beaming. "Zelda, a-- a baby."

"Ours," she whispered, cradling her still-flat belly.

[blondewombat]

"How long, have you-- you didn't say anything." Chase beams, kissing her suddenly. "I'll make an appointment for the doctor, you--"

He stops, suddenly, remembering. Right, the doctor. As in, Zelda's chemo doctor.

"I have not had a cycle in nearly two months," she said, grabbing his hand and squeezing it.

[blondewombat]

"Two months?" Chase repeats. "We can push up your appointment. You're going tomorrow."

Pulling away, he reaches for his phone, ready to make the call.

"Are you happy?" Zelda asked, beaming and barely able to contain herself.

[blondewombat]

"I am," Chase says, smiling wide. "But you-- honey, you're not ready for this."

[wisdomsage]

Zelda's face fell a little. "You are not happy."

[blondewombat]

"Zelda, honey, look at me," Chase says. "I'm happy, I am, but I'm a little more focused on the fact that this could kill you."

Zelda burst into tears then, entire world just crumpling. Of course she could not have a pregnancy and be happy.

Chase drops the test, startled as he pulls her against him.

"Shh," he murmurs, rocking her. "Honey, please, don't-- it's okay, I won't let anything happen to you. I'm right here."

"I was so happy and all you see is flaw," she whispered, burying her face against his neck. "I am flawed to you."
