Three Women Who Never Brushed Hermione's Hair

Mrs Granger had very particular attitudes about brushing. This was expected, as she was a very able dentist, and Hermione, her only child, had only the two sets of teeth. "They'll last you a lifetime if you're careful," she'd say, supervising the thrice-daily ritual.

About hair-brushing she was considerably more lax, and Hermione, though not a scampish child, felt some small victory at neglecting her hair for days on end, till it was so tangled that Mr Granger was compelled to notice and criticize. Then Hermione would brush viciously, ripping tangles at their roots, hoping Mum would notice her screams.

About certain rules, Minerva was meticulous, and so she never touched her students with anything resembling affection. She had used her wand for discipline, of course, both magical and corporeal, until the Board of Governors declared the practice barbarism worthy of Muggles, but she had never lain her bare hand on a child except, perhaps, for a moment, or in an emergency. About this, there could never be a hint of impropriety.

So this evening, as she examined Miss Granger, still Petrified, Minerva's hands remained at her sides, tempted as she was to let her fingers untangle Hermione's bushy hair.

Fleur fussed over Hermione's complexion and Mrs Weasley over her figure, and she closed her eyes and counted to thirty and considered the complexities of translation in international Wizarding law and said nothing. She only had to be a bride once, and that evidently meant being resigned to face creams tested on semi-sentient creatures and a magically confining corset that seemed both unnatural and unnecessary, given Ron's intimacy with her body's real contours. These, she endured. But when Molly approached with a brush, Hermione felt the silent censure of her grooming habits and twisted away, enraged.

"I'll do it myself!"
