I don't know, I think I've seen it used as Best Beloved aka thefourthvine's partner.

ETA: Nevermind, I take that back. She doesn't use the initials bb, just calls her Best Beloved.

I've been auto-reading it as "best beloved," but that seems awfully intimate for a random internet endearment. If it is "baby" that makes more sense.

I've had it translated for me as "best buddy".

I figured it as 'baby', as per your first commenter. (The usage bothers the hell out of me for some reason ... )

I'm mostly stuck on ". . . the extra two whole letters were that much of a hardship?"

I always hear it in my brainvoice as BB, as in Red Ryder BB gun, as in "You'll shoot your eye out!"

One day I will vocalize this as an endearment to someone and they will be confused. Or not, since I find that I never, ever use endearments aloud.

bb = baby

I knew immediately, in terms of context of what someone was writing it, what it meant. Then again, there's a lot of places I go where those kinds of Internet slang is used a lot. Most times used in an affectionate/silly way or in a mocking/macros kind of manner.
