Biggest lesson I've learned: Use boxes suitable for the weight of the items being shipped. Moving boxes -- the cheap kind you buy from moving companies who are going to load your stuff into their truck and take it to your new house -- are completely unsuitable for most shipping. They're only good for very lightweight stuff. For heavier things, shell out the cash for sturdy, heavy duty boxes. Otherwise you risk your stuff being damaged or even lost due to flimsy boxes giving out under less than tender handling.
