Disagreement

Kristy wanted to wear the lobster costumes she wore with Bart to the Halloween Hop in eighth grade.

Mary Anne wanted Kristy to wear a dress.

Then she changed her mind and wanted Kristy to wear a tuxedo.

Then she changed her mind again and thought people might think Kristy was the boy.

Kristy said she was the boy.

Mary Anne said that's not what she meant.

Kristy said she knew that but people would think she was the boy anyhow, since she was going in jeans.

Mary Anne went back to the initial dress proposition.

Kristy said she didn't need to pretend to be a girl anymore.

Mary Anne said Kristy was a girl, and that's why she liked her.

Kristy blushed.

Mary Anne demonstrated exactly what girly things she liked about Kristy.

Kristy turned all sorts of interesting colors and made all sorts of interesting sounds.

Then Mary Anne's father came home.

Kristy and Mary Anne were supposed to leave the door to Mary Anne's room open when they were in there together.

Kristy thought it would be a good idea to use the secret passage to get around this rule.

Mary Anne did not.

Kristy's mother and Watson had a similar rule, and there were always more people running around the Brewer-Thomas house, so they usually went to Mary Anne's house after school.

Sometimes, though, like today, Mr. Spier came home early.

Fortunately, they had lots of practice getting dressed quickly.

And if he asked, they could always say they'd been trying on prom dresses.

But Mr. Spier didn't come upstairs.

Kristy still wanted to wear the lobster costumes.

Mary Anne pointed out that Logan never made her dress in costume if she didn't want to.

This was a dangerous topic.

The last time Mary Anne mentioned Logan, Kristy put her fist right through the wall.

She was calmer this time.

She only punched a pillow.

Mary Anne had to sit through another discussion of all Logan's shortcomings as a boyfriend.

Eventually they all came back to the same point: Logan wasn't Kristy.

Mary Anne conceded the point.

"I'm still not wearing a lobster costume."

"I know," said Kristy. "I just like to make you mad."

"Why?" Mary Anne asked suspiciously.

"You're cute when you turn red. That's why I think you should dress like a lobster."

"Everyone would look at me! You know I hate that."

"You're going to be on my arm, Mary Anne. I think everyone will be looking at you anyhow."

Mary Anne blushed.

"You're okay with this, right? We agreed..."

Mary Anne nodded and started to cry.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Kristy put her arm around Mary Anne's shoulder. She was very concerned.

"It's not that," said Mary Anne.

"What is it?"

"Everyone will be looking at me because I'm with you."

Kristy waited.

"And they'll wonder what on earth the prettiest girl in school is doing with someone like me!"

Kristy snorted.

But Mary Anne knew the truth.

Everyone who laughed at her for dating a dyke was really just jealous, because Kristy was the most beautiful girl in school.

Maybe even in Connecticut.

Maybe even in the whole United States.

"Mary Anne?"

"Yes?" Mary Anne had stopped crying.

"Will you wear the lobster costume?"

"Absolutely not," said Mary Anne.
