a. Last year's
year in fic meme.
b. The year in fic!
First, I'm not going to post a masterlist because, um, I wrote something like 87 one-shots, plus additional drabbles, ficlets, and crack.
Second, various version of the questions are going around; I snurched this version from
tartanshell (and added back some questions from last year's version).
Third, I waited till the last possible moment to do this because I kept on hoping I'd finish just oneee more!
Favorite story this year (of my own):
Ducky's Book, Volume Three and Half. (CA Diaries, Ducky, boyslash, PG-13). Possibly because I'm on a CA Diaries kick right now, but mostly because I really do think I captured his voice, and I so wish this (or something like it) had been canon.
My best story this year:
Amoral Boundaries (Buffyverse, Dawn/Illyria, R). My first award-winner, the plottiest thing I've ever written, ensemble fic with Themes and Motifs. I'm pretty sure this is the best thing I've ever written, period.
Most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Car Trouble (Gateverse, Jack/Sam, PG-13). I think of this as underappreciated, but on checking, I got like 10 hits of fb for it. Maybe it's just 'cos it's clearly not going to be a flist-pleaser and I don't run in the Jack/Sam circles, but I always think this would've gotten more fb if I weren't, you know, me.
Most overappreciated story, still in my opinion:
The Five Games You Play In Heaven (Buffyverse, multiple het+femslash pairings, PG-13). Don't get me wrong, I really love this fic. I just don't understand why it was the most popular fic I've ever written, by far, since I don't know what really distinguishes it from the rest of what I write.
Most fun story:
The one I had the most fun writing is probably different from the one that's the most fun to read, but I want to pimp
Charade (Gateverse, Jack/Daniel, PG, Mpreg) on account of 'cos, mpreg. I love it when I'm writing crack and I know it's crack and it can just be crack that way.
Just noticed that another extremely fun fic was
Tokens Exchanged On The Road To Enlightenment (Buffyverse, Wes/Harmony, NC-17). I mean, it's Harm. Harm's always fun to write!
Sexiest story:
I'm kind of inclined to say
Fantasia (Buffyverse, Faith/Giles/Wesley/Buffy, NC-17), though I'm somewhat disappointed in myself for the use of pr0n-tropes. On the other hand, my current favorite is
Chocovanilla (Buffyverse, Joyce/Olivia, NC-17), which for some strange reason hits my kinks pretty nicely.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
It says more about me than about the fic, but McGonagall spanking River in
Incurable (FireflyxBuffyversexHP, Giles/River/McGonagall, NC-17) is one of my favorite fic moments.
"Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
This is always a very difficult question for me since I push my own boundaries so often! This year's candidates:
Kid-Kit (BSC, Stacey/Charlotte, NC-17, bondage+kink+chan)
Undertow (VMars, Keith/Veronica, R, incest)
Note that for, um, obvious reasons, both those fics are flocked. I think the BSC one wins in the end, because it was so intentionally squicky.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Impulse Control: Pocketful of Starlight (Gateverse, Sheppard/Weir, R.) I do not get Sheppard. Not at all. This is my best effort at figuring him out.
Hardest story to do:
Meh! There are so many that are difficult, including the secret santas I'm still working on, but I have to say my Multiverse fic,
Matchmaker, Matchmaker (FireflyxGateverse, Sam/Jayne, PG-13) was the hardest. I'm not a Jayne fan and I really don't grok him, and the combination of crossover, weird pairing, and het was enough to make this, well, hard.
Biggest disappointment:
I think
When I Am Old I Shall (Gateverse, Teal'c gen, PG). I had a wonderful image in my head of all of SG-1 growing old, with grumpy Jack and old married Sam/Daniel and Teal'c not sure what to do about the aging but... it didn't really turn out like that. Didn't get a very big response, and I think it really feels like it was a big idea dashed off too fast.
Biggest surprise:
Shining Time Station (Gateverse, Weir/Zelenka, PG-13). I was really uncertain about this when posting, and didn't feel very good about my Zelenka-voice or my Gate-voice at all, and so was pleased with the response and by how much I liked it afterwards.
Most telling story:
Garret (Buffyverse, Olivia/Tara, PG-13.) Yes, this is my ultimate Tara-as-Sue fic.
A story I want remembered:
Gone Hollywood (Jossverse, Joss/Wesley, Joss/Alexis, NC-17, RPS.) I have no doubt that it will be. I hope so. It's my weirdest fic by far and I'm a little bit in love with it.
Happy new year, all y'all! I'm going to bed now to attempt to recover from my cold-from-hell.
