"This buddy of mine, this pal, this chum, this ex-lover, has this special orange chair that he sits in for every game, probably sitting in it right now..."

"Are you absolutely sure this is the right station?" Daniel hunkered down to squint at the dial on the portable radio, holding his bottle of beer precariously tilted in mid-air.

"1080, right, sir?" Sam clarified. Jack didn't answer her and didn't warn Daniel about the beer that was about to spill -- Sam because he knew she never forgot numbers, including numbers associated with AM radio stations, and Daniel because warning him wouldn't do any good.

"They haven't even mentioned which team has the bats yet," Daniel complained.

"At bat," Jack corrected. "And it's the right station. There's always a lot of filler between innings. How can you know everything about Ancient Egypt and know nothing about baseball?"

Daniel tilted his beer bottle upright again and found a seat against the porch railing next to Sam. It was unseasonably warm for October, making it almost a crime to watch the early-afternoon playoff game indoors. "I never really felt like I was missing out."

Given the choice, Jack would probably have cared more about hockey at this time of year -- and that was still a bit of a touchy subject, since it was so unfair that he had saved the world just for the players' union to strike -- but this was something special enough to drag him out of his cave of sports mourning.

"You've got to appreciate the history of it, at least. This could be a historic moment."

Sam quirked a grin. "I didn't realize you were interested in history, sir."

Un-American, all of them. "Come on, Carter. You can't tell me your dad never taught you about baseball."

She shrugged. "He had my brother. Besides, I didn't know you cared about Boston sports."

"It's not about that. It's about fighting tradition. Endless hope in the face of endless defeat."

"It is quite noble," Teal'c agreed.

Daniel yawned.

Jack turned up the radio, hoping to silence the unenlightened with the inane babble of the announcers. He could hear the Fenway crowd roaring as Curt Schilling took the mound for Boston for Game Five, do or die for the Yankees, and grinned.

"Noble," he echoed. "Besides, the Yanks beat my Twins."

Heh. Cuteness.

Although I so strongly suspect Jack is a Cubs fan... didn't he mention the Cubs somewhere early S1?

But of course he wouldn't root for the Yankees. That would just be wrong. :p

I agree on the Cubs thing, but I suspect he also hearts the Twins. I did once write a drabble about Jack's reaction to a Cubs/Red Sox world series... I'll have to find that...
