[communion] SGA

So I baked -- banana bread and corn muffins -- and watched SGA (S1 through "Childhood's End").

The thing about SGA is, I think I will never think of it as my show, in that tolerant, adoring, "oh show, how so ridiculous" way that I feel, e.g., about BtVS or SG-1. Gvambat never really got into SGA, which started airing at a time when my fannish ( Read more... )

"The other delightful thing is this thing we call communion. I had a prof in grad school who explained the communion that we experience as Christians as being kind of like this: I see a thing in a store that I have no interest in personally, but I know that my bff would love it, so I see it through her eyes and love it because of the communion we share."

Oh!! I love this!!!

I love fandom because it's as much about connecting with people as it is about the shows (or books, movies etc.) and I do think a large part of that is I appreciate characters and ships I would not have otherwise been interested in because I see other people's interest in them. And, non fandom-related, I think my favorite thing about reading journaling sites is that you get to see through other people's eyes every time you read their entries and so you get to have all these experiences through other people and feel more connected to the world, because there's only so much you can experience from being one person, and it's different than reading a book (although i frakking love reading books about people's experiences) because you can actually watch people change and grow for years and years and interact with them and I don't know...I think I have learned more about life through livejournal than pretty much any book I've ever read/course I've ever taken. Also, most of my friends are from common fandoms so basically tv shows connect the world! Which is why I love media and majored in Media Studies, although it was a stupid choice career-wise. Like I switched from psychology, but really media studies IS a form of psychology to me (and a fascinating one) ...

I have a list like that! Only mostly I have a list of shows I want to finish watching at some point. SG-1 and SGA are both on that one. :/ Attention span, whatever.

es) because you can actually watch people change and grow for years and years and interact with them

YES. I love this so much and it's one of the things I missed when I was away from LJ so long. I have friends I've seen grow up and it's just... kind of mind-bobbling, sometimes, how much we've gone through together (and it really feels like "together" even with people I've never met.)
