On February 18 and 19, I attended Randy’s final two performances in Cabaret with friends from Germany, Italy, Australia and Texas. We were in the first row on Saturday evening and the second row for the Sunday matinee which was a whole lot better than seeing it from Row P as I did in Pittsburgh in February of 2016 at the beginning of Randy’s yearlong tour.
Frankly, it was like seeing it for the first time as I had forgotten a lot of the little nuances that Randy puts into his role but at least this time I knew to look for him in the kick line which surprised me the first time when he popped out to tell the audience “It’s me!”
Prior to the show the theatre provided signs with sayings from the show like “Willkommen”, “What Good is Sitting Alone in Your Room”, “Bienvenue” and “Don’t Tell Mama” so that you could hold them up for a photo op which we did. There were Cabaret posters around town and especially at Woody’s where you could also pick up copies of Buzz magazine which featured Randy on the cover with a nice article inside.
At the end of Randy’s final performance after all the cast had taken their bows, the cast gave him an ovation and there were tears in his eyes as he left the stage. We were able to wait at the stage door after both performances and we got a group shot with him on Saturday. There were some people there both times that we thought may have been from the crew of QAF which he was very happy to see. On Sunday, Stephen Lynch, QAF’s make-up artist, was there and he recognized our group from seeing us at the Back to the Roots Con last June and came over to chat. During the intermission on Saturday night, some of my friends went outside for a smoke and ran into Sherry Miller who was so excited to be seeing the show. She was like a proud mama.
While in Toronto we managed to get to Woody’s several times and to have dinner in the revolving restaurant at CN Tower. We also visited with Makyla at her family’s bakery/deli one morning and got to see her daughter Evelyn who just turned one and her new son Joe who was one month old. Her husband James who we met in Cologne stopped by to say hello. Makyla still looks like a seventeen-year-old even though she is a mother of two.
As a QAF fan it is always nice to return to Toronto and visit some of the location sites particularly with friends that I have made through the show. I will be meeting up with many of them again in Barcelona in October.
