I got an e-mail out of the blue from someone I barely remember working with at Sony Entertainment, a video game company, over a decade ago. He said we had a conversation that profoundly affected him and helped him out immensely for years. The advice I gave to him doesn't really matter and was something only he could have made use of so I'm not going to repeat it.
It's kinda scary to think that just an offhand observation would affect someone so much and for so long. I'm glad it led to positive things for him. There have been two other people who have told me I've given them advice that's positively affected their lives and told me so years later. I wish that I could have the same effect on my own life. :) I'm just one of those people who can't take their own advice.
What advice would I give myself right now? Hm...
1.Record what I eat. It would make me eat better which would give me more energy to do the things I'd like to.
2.Spend money to take art classes, even though it pains me to part with the tiny amount of cash I have.
3.Spend money on art reference books, even though it's expensive.
4.Design a game with Gautam for my nephews although it's a pain to design games because I stink at it.
I know what I want for them and he's got the math background to make it useful.
5.Draw more, write more and write down all of my dreams.
I have very interesting dreams, full of ideas or at least interesting situations. Most of them even make sense after I wake up. I solve problems when I'm asleep or half asleep that I don't when I'm awake. The problems I solve aren't always the most pressing ones though.
Last night I had a great dream about a lidded wicker box or basket that my power bar and all my super messy cords were in. The wicker sides were easy to thread the cords through to my various devices. It would work, and look nice but why dream of it? It's not on the top of my todo list. :)
