Perseverance

So tonight was pretty damned interesting, all things considered. As per my usual Tuesday, I went to the bar downtown, sang some songs, that kinda thing. Well, they're having another contest down there. Tonight was... I wanna say week three. Sounds right, we'll go with that. Anyways, I show up, say hello, and I'm told if no-one signs up by 11pm, I'll have to win, simply because no one else showed up to compete. There were plenty of people there, willing to sing, but none wanting to compete.

Well, I have no problem with a freebie in most cases, but when it comes to competition, I'd rather lose than be given a win. I'd rather get by on my own talents and abilities rather than luck into an easy ace.

So when someone else signed up for the Men's category, I had mixed emotions. I was glad, you see, that someone else was competing. I wasn't so glad it was one of the highest caliber singers that shows up fairly regularly.

But, perseverance and all that. Besides, I've gone up against the best the place had to offer, and come out pretty damned well for myself. So, I have to picks myself a song, which I hadn't given the slightest thought towards. Really, I was in something of a bind, as recycling a tune too much tends to lose you points on the scorecards. It just so happened that I was in the P section of the song book. I noticed Prince (yes, it's Prince again, not that symbol, and might I add, his album Musicology is very classic, and shows off a skill he's got in spades that scant few ever really notice. The motherfucker can play a guitar like it's nobody's business)

So, I picked a song I knew from my youth. I sang Little Red Corvette, and I did pretty damned well with it.

So well, in fact, that I won the contest tonight and will move on to the finals which will be held November 8th. Tonight's win netted me a pair of free movies and a free dinner at the Boston Beanery which recently went in downtown.
