We've had problems with racoons climbing onto the one story roof at the back of our house for about a year now. We've tried lights, we've tried plywood full of two inch staples, we've tried mothballs. And as my parents aren't willing to pay me to sit on the roof all night with a slingshot, we've found an alternate solution, that appears to be working so far.
My dad has mounted a motion sensor water sprayer on the roof, hooked up to a garden hose. It senses motion, and it opens up. It took a bit of fiddling to get it to stop firing when the trees moved, but it seems to be working fine now. We found a racoon pinned down at the opposite corner of the roof in the morning, trapped by supressive fire. It finally decided to make a get-away along the evestrough, which offered some cover.
I am thoroughly delighted by the notion that my roof is protected by a robotic sentry, of a sort.
