last night, in the wake of the election, i celebrated with friends at the Mercury, while punk rock played over the speakers. i saw people i haven't seen in months, and we were all thrilled with the amazing news.
afterward, i headed from Capitol Hill down to the ferry terminal. on the way, i saw an amazingly heartwarming sight:
By
whateley23 that is a blurry cameraphone picture of over a thousand* people dancing in the street, singing, and laughing. i have never before seen something from the world of humanity which was quite as beautiful. this was just a few blocks away from the intersections where i saw tear gas and rubber bullets flying back in the so-called "Battle of Seattle" during the WTO protests here. the two events juxtaposed in my head as two polarities of Seattle's temperament and history.
on the way down the street, i saw more parties in the street downtown. all over, people shook my hand, smiled, high-fived me, cheered, laughed, and shared a sense of happiness. we shouted victory across the streets at each other. then i got on the ferry and went across Puget Sound, listening to Current 93's Swastikas for Noddy on my laptop.
edited to add: another of my friends, who has a real camera, took a number of pictures of the same street celebration
here. thank you,
marc17, for taking and posting these.

*i don't know how many more than a thousand. it could have been a couple of thousand or more. it was a damned lot of people.
