Hi Folks-
I wanted to send out a quick update about Ian's cochlear implant surgery. We are scheduled to go in tomorrow morning, and he should be in surgery around 8 AM. The procedure takes about 3 hours, and he'll be under observation in the afternoon. We expect to be home tomorrow evening. The anesthesia will make him woozy for probably most of the rest of the day, and he may have balance problems for 24 hours after surgery since they are working directly on the cochlea.
About 10 days after the surgery, we will have his implants activated and he will be able to hear. Then the real work starts, and we will have weekly visits to our audiologist and speech therapist for several years to catch him up on verbal communication development.
In August, he will be eligible to start school at the regional day school for hearing disabled children, and will be at school every day working on speech and hearing with a small group of children that have similar issues.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this time,
Jack, Sarah, Ian and Craig
