Vista epitomises failure.

So I thought I'd give this Windows Vista thing a try, since even if I hate MS Windows, it is still worth knowing how to drive it since it's everywhere ( Read more... )

I don't think it's fair to blame Vista given that (obviously) Vista will install. It only needs 20GB of space to install so it's probably some other hardware issue.

Essentially - you're doing it wrong!

I agree that I must be doing something wrong.. However, given that I /am/ a professional geek, attempting to install it onto a fresh hard drive (ie. without any other windows or linux stuff to get in the way), it seems poor that I can't get it to work! And that it doesn't even give a useful error message as to WHY.

If something is so badly designed that even a clueful geek goes WTF? and gives up during what should be a simple run-of-the-mill install, then what does that say about the product?

Absolutely! After all, isn't M$ meant to make easy to use OSs, that you don't need a Masters in CS to get working, unlike that dastardly Linux!

Is this a version that you bought for enormous sums of money on a CD in a shop, such as ordinary people might be expected to buy?

Hell no! It's an MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) version.
It's supposed to be the same as the real deal though :P

Perhaps they have DRM'd out their own developer version, and then got the computer to lie about partitions when you try to install it :/

All operating systems have their ways of working. You can't just go through a windows install clicking on 'OK' to everything and expect it to work these days. You really need to know what you're doing.

You're a linux geek. Linux stuff works simply for you. I'm a windows geek. Windows stuff works simply for me. I'm not even going to mention Ubuntu's wierd software-ignore-hardware-raid setup that I had to work through a few months back. That took a lot of googling to figure out why my hardware raid wasn't working!

I don't believe there's anything so magical about the _setup_ for either installation that should prevent anyone from half a brain getting through them.

Yeah, Toby prefers linux, but he's not stupid.

Indeed. Have you ever tried installing Mac OS X on a machine that says on its logo that it's supposed to run it? Whoo! I thought my finger would wear out from clicking "ok" five times!

Did you find the "cancel" option to all the things it wanted you to sign up for?

Not giving them money is very easy.

I realise that, but my point was that Vista failed to install after a knowledgeable geek spent half an beating his head against the installer, without even managing to get past the first hurdle.
I didn't even HAVE any options to really select, except "which partition", and I'm there going "I don't care, use one, use many, whatever.."
Is there some way to get the installer to give me a log file with the actual error, rather than the totally useless "selected partition is no good for me, you idiot" that it gives me currently?

It doesn't seem like it's an entirely unreasonable criticism. I very much doubt that the hardware wintrmute is installing on to is the exact same hardware used in a real Mac - and you'd expect the default Vista drivers / hardware support to be a hell of a lot better than hacked Mac OS + random community written drivers.
