It was a miserable night. Sergio sat forward in his seat, hunched over the steering wheel, squinting at the road in front of him. He was driving no faster than the speed of a turtle - he could barely see a thing - the rain was falling down in heavy sheets, concealing the lines of the road and warping the streetlights into blurry halos. Sergio flicked his lights onto high beam and squinted his eyes further, leaning so far over his steering wheel he was almost on the dash.

His phone suddenly burst into life and Sergio cursed, slowing down even further and reaching out blindly for his phone, not daring to look away from the road for more than a second.

Finally getting his phone open, Sergio fumbled around for a moment before bringing the phone to his ear, “hello?”

“Sergio?”

Fernando. Sergio eased his foot off the accelerator and slowed to a crawl ignoring the car tailgating him from behind.

“Are you okay?” Fernando asked quickly, “are you driving?”

“Yeah, I’m driving, I...”

“Pull over,” Fernando ordered, “you’ve been drinking. I’ll come and get you.”

“I’ve only had...” Sergio began.

“I don’t care,” Fernando cut in, “pull over. There’s a patrol on Beltana Street and if you’re tested with any alcohol in your system then...”

Sergio sighed, he knew the rules. “Fine,” he relented, flicking on his indicator and pulling off to the side of the road, “I’m pulling over.”

“Where are you?”

“Um...” Sergio squinted out his window, “...Moreover Drive?”

“I’ll be there in ten minutes. Don’t move.”

The phone clicked off and Sergio looked at his phone questionably for a moment before flicking it closed and turning off the engine of his car. Without the gentle growl of the engine and the soft sounds of Flamenco drifting through his speakers, all he could hear was the rain pattering down on the roof of his car and tapping against the windows.

Sighing heavily, Sergio slid down into his seat and loosened his tie. It probably was a good idea to pull over, he had come straight from the after party and had a couple of drinks swimming through his system. He didn’t feel drunk, but his head was fuzzy and there was a merry glow running through his veins - the type that could only be present after a couple of beers. The type that had him peering through his windshield wondering what the rain would feel like against his skin. The type that had him opening his door and slipping outside. The type that had him smiling as the rain poured down from the sky, soaking his suit and plastering his hair to his scalp.

The gutters were flooded and overflowing onto the footpath. Sergio walked leisurely weaving from side to side to miss the worst of the puddles, enjoying the feel of the raindrops against his face and neck. He was several streets away when his phone started vibrating in his back pocket, Sergio pulled it out and briefly checked the called ID before flipping it open. “Hey Nando.”

“Where are you?” Fernando’s asked. “I see your car but I don’t see you.”

“I started walking,” Sergio answered easily, wondering briefly if the rain was going to ruin his phone.

Fernando cursed lightly, “dammit Sese. Right or left?”

“Right.”

“Okay, I’m turning around.”

Sergio tucked his phone against his shoulder and slid his hands into his pockets, “you didn’t have to come get me, you know?”

“I’m just looking out for you like you look out for me.”

“Yeah... I know.” Sergio tilted his head back to the sky, letting the raindrops fall unchecked against his skin, “thanks.”

“Your welcome. Tell me when you see me.”

Sergio looked up the street just in time to see headlights come around the corner, “I see you.” He paused, “nice car. Is it new?”

“Something like that.”

A black Audi pulled up beside him, and the drivers side window rolled down to reveal Fernando’s face. “Enjoying yourself?” Fernando asked as he cast an amused eye over Sergio’s form.

Sergio flipped his phone shut and held his arms out, “I haven’t decided yet. I did just ruin my suit.”

Fernando smiled, “get in Sese. I’ll take you home.”

Sergio lent down and rested his arms on Fernando’s window, “nah, you come out.”

“I’m not coming out,” Fernando protested, shoving Sergio away playfully as he started slipping his upper body through the window.

“Come on Nando, please,” Sergio pouted, “I’ve had way too much to drink and you wouldn’t be a very good friend if you didn’t join me in my insanity.”

“I’m not going to stand in the rain with you, Sese.”

“Huh.” Sergio paused for a second before shrugging and stepping away from the car. “Okay then.”

Fernando watched bewildered as Sergio stepped back onto the pavement and began walking away from him. Cursing lightly, Fernando shifted his car into drive and rolled along slowly, keeping pace with Sergio as he walked. “Are you serious?” Fernando asked, raising his voice to be heard above the noise of the rain. “Am I seriously going to have to get out and drag you into the car?”

Sergio grinned, “pretty much.”

Geezus. Fernando grumbled and groaned to himself for another couple of meters before hitting the breaks and idling the engine. “I fucking hate you,” he complained, unbuckling his seat belt and stepping out into the rain. “You’re crazy, you know that?”

Sergio laughed, “do you have a football? There are some grounds a couple of streets from here?”

“Well that sounds great,” Fernando replied sarcastically, “then we can both get sick and be benched for the next three weeks.”

Sergio rolled his eyes, “don’t be a killjoy. Everyone has to take a risk sometimes.”

“I am taking a risk,” Fernando smiled, stepping over a puddle and into Sergio’s personal space, “I’m here with you aren’t I?”
