Bella liked to think she had good taste in literature. Over the years she had eagerly consumed a myriad on novels that sent her everywhere from a potential utopian future, to Elizabethan England. But there was one series of books that sent her further into the realm of imagination than any other... Harry Potter.

It was with trepidation that she purchased the first book. But within several pages she found herself engrossed in the world of witches and wizards, Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and the infamous Harry Potter.

She churned through the first three books in the period of a week, so she supposed it wasn’t all that surprising when the books started plaguing her unconscious hours as well as her day time ones. No, it wasn’t the dreams that surprised her... it was their contents.

The dream started out like every other. She was walking through the darkened hallways of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She knew she was at Hogwarts because there was a taste of magic in the air that was so thick she could almost reach out and touch it. It was dark, perhaps the middle of the night and she was tip toeing down the long damp hallways in search of... well... the dream didn’t specify that much. But she knew she was looking for something, or someone and it was crucial that she stay as quiet as possible.

Bella crossed her arms across her chest to ward of the chill. She was walking the halls of Hogwarts in her summer bed clothes. How lame was that? You would think that if her subconsciousness insisted on sending her here, it would at least dress her appropriately. Hogwart’s robes would have been good; Gryffindor ones preferably. But instead she was here in her tattiest tank top and flannel pyjama bottoms. How embarrassing.

Pushing these thoughts to the back of her mind Bella descended a staircase, desperately hoping she wouldn’t step into a trick stair or even worse trip and tumble to the bottom. She breathed a sigh of relief when she made it down safely.

Her relief was short lived, because in the next instant a soft drawling voice broke the silence.

“What are you doing?”

Bella spun around to see a tall figure standing in the shadows several meters away. She remained silent and frozen in place until he stepped into the light. It only took her a peek at his white blond hair and the Slytherin badge on his chest for understanding to click in her mind.

Malfoy.

She was standing in her pyjamas in front of Draco freaking Malfoy.

Now that she knew who he was Bella surveyed him curiously. He was better looking than she expected, she would almost go as far to say that he was beautiful. Not in a classic sense of course, but he was still strangely beautiful. Malfoy was all cold hard angles; high cheekbones, strong jaw line, grey eyes framed with thick eyelashes that stood out painfully against his pale skin. His hair was so blond it was almost white and falling like feathers into his eyes. He was... tragically beautiful.

He was looking at her through narrowed eyes by now, “I’ve never seen you before, what house are you in?”

The loony one, Bella answered internally with a wry smile. Oh well, while she was here she might as well enjoy herself. Closing the distance between them she extended a hand, “I’m Bella. I’m new here.”

He ignored her hand. “What’s your surname?”

Bella thought quickly before blurting out the first thing that came to mind. “Snape.”

Malfoy raised an eyebrow, “as in Severus Snape?”

It was extremely difficult to keep a straight face so she nodded not trusting herself to speak.

Draco appeared to be satisfied with her answer and finally shook her hand. “I’m Malfoy. Draco Malfoy. Slytherin house. You’ll be joining us there I assume?”

“Of course,” Bella replied in amusement. “There isn’t any other house I’d...”

Draco cut her off with a wave of her hand. They both fell silent and Bella glanced around the large foyer trying to make out the source of his distraction. She caught sight of the glow coming around the corner a second before he did, but before she could even open her mouth he had grabbed her arm and yanked her away.

He pulled her hurriedly down the hallway before opening the first random door and shoving her inside. She had just enough time to see the stack of brooms and paint cans lying haphazardly on the floor before Malfoy squeezed in beside her, shut the door and they were thrown into darkness.

They stood there silently for several seconds before Malfoy shuffled around and muttered, “lumos.”

The tiny dazzling light from his wand filled the room.

Bella fought the urge to ‘ooo and ahh’ like the fanatical Harry Potter fan she was. That internal crazy fan also wanted to grab the wand and wave it around with exclamations like ‘hocus pocus’ and ‘razzle dazzle’ but she restrained herself.

She took stock of the tiny room they were standing in. Wooden walls, a tiny unlit lamp dangling from the ceiling, paint cans, mops, and containers with strange labels like Mrs Scower’s All Magical Mess Remover and Dr Ubbly’s Oblivious Unction.

A broom cupboard she realised. I’m standing in a boom cupboard.

Seriously?

The situation was so orthodox that she started laughing. Malfoy’s hand immediately clamped down over her mouth stifling the noise. “Are you insane?” he whispered harshly.

Bella was just about to shove him away and reply in a similar scathing manner but shuffling outside reached her ears and she stilled.

“I know they’re around here somewhere my sweet.”

Filch!

“Nox,” Malfoy whispered and his wand tip extinguished.

Pitch darkness.

Bella swallowed and listened closely as Filch and Mrs Norris approached the cupboard. They paused just outside the door and her eyes flicked down to where the soft light extended underneath the frame.

She couldn’t stop a gasp of surprise when suddenly Mrs Norris’s paw swiped underneath. Bella jumped back frantically and bumped into Draco. His arm wrapped around her waist firmly before the impact could send her sprawling to the floor.

It was while Filch lingered that Bella realised how close Malfoy and herself were actually standing. The entire length of his body was pressed into hers and the smell of cool night air, rain and smoke surrounded her like a cloud.

She had assumed whilst reading the books that his touch and mere presence would be unpleasant, but she found it oddly comforting. He was warm against her back and the arm around her waist was firm and reassuring.

She didn’t have any longer to bask in his presence, because at that moment the door was flung open but instead of Filch staring in at her it was Victoria.

Bella screamed.

“Bella... Bella!”

Bella awoke with a start, shooting straight up in bed with a gasp.

“Bella?”

Edward.

Bella struggled to control her breathing as Edward comforted her. “Are you okay?” he asked wrapping an arm around her waist. “It was just a nightmare?”

Bella nodded and her heartbeat slowed. Yes she was okay. But as she lay back down she could still feel two things; the terror of seeing Victoria and the feel of Draco’s arm around her waist.
