Summer Days

So, the weekend prior to this one, I enjoyed the annual Rose Island Clam Bake with my folks. Sadly, my father has lost a lot of mobility in the last year, so getting onto and off the boat was difficult, but he managed it. We were blessed with a perfect day, not too hot with an ocean breeze, and I just enjoyed my husband's company with a lovely view over the Bay to Newport. We did our yearly hike around the island and got a good amount of sea glass for our efforts. It was really very wonderful. Of course, eating far too much seafood was also wonderful. Nom nom nom! We got off the island around 3:30pm and then floating around my parents' pool for about an hour before heading back to Providence. I don't know if it was just a long day in the sun or else a crazy week that included my sister's birthday party in Jamestown one night and a wonderful cruise of Boston Harbor listening to one of my favorite bands, Carbon Leaf, and watching the moon reflected on the ocean another night, but I was plain tuckered out by the time I got home. I slept a good 13 hours that night. Thankfully, we had no where to go on Sunday, so I could attempt to put my life back in order and put together some stuff for my parents' yard sale. Which happened this past weekend.

I got up around 6:30am on Saturday morning to head down to Jamestown in order assist with the hauling and organization of stuff. We had a really good turn out of people stopping to look at our stuff and I am always completely amazed by how my trash might be someone's treasure. My favorite sale of the day was a guy who bought two old kerosene lamps that might sister was selling. He was just so absolutely thrilled and told us how this was only the second red glass lamp he'd ever seen. He said that he fixes up old lamps and then hangs them around his porch. The way he described how it looks when he lights them all was magical. That's the kind of sale you just love to make. As my mother says, a yard sale is not meant to make money, it's true purpose is to pass along stuff which you no longer want or no longer have a use for. I love that idea. I kind of wish I'd taken more time to go through the stuff in my house and gotten rid of more, but a trunk full is still something. From there, we flew up to Providence for Savor Providence, a charity event for Trinity Rep. You get a book of ten "tastes" and tromp around to many of Providence's restaurants for your tastes. My favorites this year were Rick's Road House (pulled pork slider or baby back ribs), Red Stripe (seafood chowder and crab salad), and Gracie's (pulled pork slider on brioche). By the time we were done, Mark should have been rolling me home, I was so full! We got home, walked to dog, and dashed off to a bbq hosted by the lovely conspiratrix and her husband, jameyhasnolj . Sadly, I think I may have been less than conscious and we decided to leave a bit early before we fell asleep talking to folks. That being said, it was delightful to see everyone and chat for a bit. I fear we are not as social as we once were. There just never seems to be the time anymore! Happily, we were able to sleep in on Sunday and managed to do very little other than home cleaning, grocery shopping, and a bit of Dragon Age.

I fear that it is suddenly Monday again, but I am cheered by the fact that next weekend will be a long one with the addition of Labor Day and I currently, shockingly, have no plans for the entire weekend. It's actually pretty darn awesome. Today, my nephew, Eliot, gets his tonsils out. He'd been very tired for a long time and a sleep study had determined that his tonsils created pretty bad sleep apea (9 out of a scale of 10), so the determination was that he did not need his tonsils and if that helps him actually be rested, it's a good idea to get rid of them. I have good thoughts for the little guy and hope it all works out. Of course, he was thrilled (pre-operation) by the fact that he'd get to eat a lot of ice cream and receive a prize. He has determined that this prize should be a dog. My sister is less than excited about that prospect, especially since they are living out of their summer home until they can find a permanent house after selling their place in Providence. Craziness! Good luck, Eliot!
