(mostly) musical, a little film...and remembering Challenger

oo1. Last night we went out for dinner, and while we were walking home, N began whistling "Gold" by KAT-TUN.

...

He didn't realize what he was whistling, of course, until I turned to stare at him with shocked eyes. I hardly ever play their music around him, so I'm still not sure how that happened! :)

oo2. We saw Juno this weekend! It was a fantastic film - Ellen Page (Juno) was a revelation, and the writing was so sharp and witty and incredibly moving. This is definitely a film that deserves the attention it's receiving right now. I was also tickled by how many of the film's actors came out of television!

oo3. I was complaining to acchikocchi last week that I lacked musical inspiration - even with thousands of songs at my disposal, somehow nothing was clicking, and I need music to help me write (and I've been in a MAJOR writing slump lately)...but I think I'm falling in love with a new band: Mogwai, from Glasgow, Scotland. They are atmospheric and gritty and also very melodic, which is a beautiful combination. I'm beginning to see why Mogwai (along with Kronos Quartet) was the perfect fit for Clint Mansell's score to Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain. Many of you have heard me rave about the soundtrack before, which is a haunting example of minimalist-styled music, and now that I've heard some of Mogwai's work, I can say that Mansell chose to work with the perfect band for the job. Of course Kronos Quartet is always good, and they've recorded the music of other minimalist composers such as Philip Glass and Steve Reich. In any case, is there anyone else out there who likes Mogwai? And if so, tell me what songs you love and what I should seek out.

oo4. I have much love for the new KAT-TUN PV. There's not much more to say that hasn't been said already, but having it in HQ was worth the wait. :D :D :D

oo5. On a more sober note, today is the twenty-second anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which I still remember vividly. This was one of those horribly memorable events that is burned into my childhood memory, much like JFK's assassination was for my parents' generation. I'll never forget the images of that day.

[eta: so many typos, gosh!]
