nor do I understand how/why people make condescending comments without any supporting argument whatsoever.
I suspect people do it out of some idea that it will make them look better or more intellectual. They have put away childish things so to speak. IMO they are wrong of course. It is acting in this condescending manner that is childish, not enjoying some books.
Also I suspect it has something to do with insecurity. I once had a rather horrible professor who went on and on about how his son wanted to learn how to play guitar, but he (the prof) would prefer if he learnt the violin - because "a guitar was so common" (sic!)After a while I came to realise that this professor was deadly afraid on not fitting the supposed professor image (wearing tweed, listening to classical music and watching only French art house films. Truly - some Art History professors are extremely conservative), so he talked down anything that could threaten this image. Like a guitar playing son apparently. And that? Is just sad. I never asked him about the HP books, but I strongly suspect that he would have considered them beneath him.
