I love today's National Geographic photo so much! So, so cute.

See for yourself!

A few DC area film festivals:

- Guerilla Film Fest (Fri/Sat only, June 1 & 2) [films]

- Korean Film Festival (there are still several films left through June)

- THE WORLD OF PORTUGUESE CINEMA [info pasted from the Freer/Sackler Galleries upcoming events email]

The Freer Gallery of Art presents a survey of Portuguese cinema, including films rarely, if ever, seen in the United States. As in the upcoming exhibition Encompassing the Globe, seafaring, history, and immigration are among the diverse subjects of these films.

This series is cosponsored by the Instituto Camões, the Cinemateca Portuguesa-Museu do Cinema, and the Embassy of Portugal, Washington, D.C.

All films are in Portuguese with English subtitles unless otherwise indicated.

Maria do Mar
Friday, June 1, 7 p.m.
(Portugal / 1930 / 94 min. / b&w / silent)

This film by Leitão de Barros is one of the treasures of the Portuguese silent era. Recently restored by the Cinemateca Portuguesa, its rich, beautifully composed images explore life, love, and danger in a Portuguese fishing town. Burnett Thomson provides live musical accompaniment.

Silvestre
Saturday, June 2, 2 p.m.
(Portugal / 1982 / 118 min./ b&w)

A rebellious, witty iconoclast, João César Monteiro was one of the most controversial figures in Portuguese cinema. Based on Portuguese folktales, Silvestre uses ribald humor and gorgeous, glowing images inspired by classical European painting to tell the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a knight. Intended for mature audiences.

Another Way of Life / Mudar de Vida
Sunday, June 3, 1 p.m.
In person: Paulo Rocha, Director
(Portugal / 1966 / 90 min. / b&w)

A soldier returns to his hometown from fighting in Angola, only to find his former sweetheart has married his brother. Discouraged, the young soldier vows to leave town and make a better life for himself. This film by Paulo Rocha is an important component of the New Portuguese Cinema movement.

A Bee in the Rain/ Abelha na Chuva
Sunday, June 3, 3 p.m.
(Portugal / 1972 / 76 min. / b&w)

With cinematic bravado, Fernando Lopes relates a tale of romance and jealousy among the rural gentry, based on a famous novel by Portuguese writer Carlos de Oliveira. The jarring, almost hallucinatory quality of the film's imagery well conveys the emotional upheavals within the characters.
