JDrama ramble

Hmmm, I think I'm coming down with a cold. I woke up at 5:30 this morning with a painful sore throat and I feel yucky today.

But *glee* I'll get to watch the new episode of Doctor Who! It literally just finished, so I'll go squeeze some orange juice and settle in to watch.

In media news, I've started watching Japanese drama Antique (thanks to riccichan for the inspiration). The video quality is poor, and the subtitles are even worse (I think I read somewhere that the English subs were translated from Chinese subs and these are truly awful. They're worse than those Gokusen 2 soft subs I always complain about. For example: "cream" is translated as "milk oil." Ouch!) but it has Takki! And Fujiki Naohito! And Abe Hiroshi! Takki is a young boxer who is crazy about cake and becomes a master baker's apprentice. Fujiki is the doe-eyed master baker. I'm into episode 2 and it's alternately weird, cracky, charming and touching. I'm coming to terms with the long stares Fujiki and Shiina (the owner of the cake shop where the drama is set) share - if I didn't know better I'd say they were deliberately trying to imply something between the two men. I laugh and laugh when they stare at each other for minutes! And then there was the scene I just saw where Takki's character (Kanda) goes to his old training facility and falls asleep in an office. The other boxers find him sleeping and they are drawn irresistably to how good he smells. There is something very strange about watching a group of bare-chested, athletic men drooling over a sleeping young man because he smells delicious (from the cakes, of course). ;) Totally giggle-worthy moment!

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I'm also rewatching Gokusen 2 - the SARS fansubbed version, and I have to say that this time around I'm loving it! By the time I got done with the first Gokusen series, I had moved from "this is fun" to "I LOVE IT" and I find myself feeling the same way about series 2. It's a total rehash of the first drama, plot-wise, characterwise, etc., but I don't know if it's the higher quality of the subs or the passage of time (and therefore greater affection I have for this cast, since when I first saw G2 I was just getting to know Jin, Kame, etc.), but I'm really enjoying it so far. And Koike Teppei is cute as a button! ;) One thing I totally love more from the first series, however, is Yankumi's love interest, Shinohara-san, who is gorgeous and wonderful. Kujo, Yankumi's second series love interest isn't remotely as interesting and his looks are too bland.
