2046 icons and discussion

I've made a small handful of 2046 icons (11 in total). Most of these icons were made for koalathebear, out of a discussion we were having about this gorgeous film. The film portion of the discussion is copied below, if you are interested in more 2046 randomness!

Just a little discussion...

In an earlier email, I mentioned this random thought to koalathebear:"And I had a thought about 2046 which occured to me this morning while I was watching a bit of it. Forgive me if this isn't terribly original. At first I didn't like the facial hair on the futurisitic Takuya Kimura character. Of course now, I've completely changed my mind and I like it quite a lot. But one thing I wondered...since the futuristic TK character is an idealized projection of Tony Leung's character, perhaps that is why he is visualized with the moustache, etc.? Since TL's character sports facial hair, so he gave that attribute to his projected self? The two characters, the TK boyfriend of Faye Wong vs the future TK character are so different, at least appearance-wise."
koalathebear responded quite thoughtfully:"I hadn't thought about it but you are right, it's quite significant. Kimura's almost always clean-shaven, I've never seen him with facial hair in anything so I probably should have thought about it a bit more. I think it's in the doco, WKW mentions that he wanted Tony Leung's character to have exactly the same look that he had in In the mood for love. Apparently Tony Leung objected and said that he couldn't do it if he didn't have a moustache :D He felt that the character was behaving differently and he needed some physical reminder that there was a difference between the characters so they settled on a moustache :D

It therefore makes complete sense to me that that's why they then gave 'Tak' some facial hair as well. While I liked Tak, because I knew that he was actually 'Tony Leung', I foundthat I couldn't wish too hard that he got his android sweetheart :) I love so many moments in the movie but that first glimpse of Android Faye as she's looking down inquiringly through the ..... hole? gramophone thing? is so haunting:'I once fell in love with someone ... After a while she wasn't there.'

Don't ask me what that means ;) Nonetheless, when Future Tak is crying and so sorrowful about not getting his love, I was sad with him although happy with Faye for being so constant. I just loved the idea that in the 'present day', the lovers were so faithful and constant to one another despite the long distance, the time and the opposition of her father. It was very romantic and uncharacteristically positive for a WKW movie."

koalathebear wrote:"I take it you agree with me that the Tak/Faye kisses are much hotter than the Tony/Zhang Zi Yi or Tony/Gong Li kisses? :)"
I replied:"YES, the Tak/Faye kiss is way hotter than Tony/Zhang ZiYi! (the latter are kind of boring, imo) I know you prefer the present Tak (boyfriend Takuya), but I just ignore the fact that future Tak is a Tony projection, and I just love him in that crazy outfit with the crazy hair, and so passionate, with such heat and intensity in his eyes as he's trying to tell his secret, and then later when he's asking her to leave."
koalathebear responded:"I know you prefer the present Tak (boyfriend Takuya), but I just ignore the fact that future Tak is a Tony projection,

Heh well I wouldn't push away future Tak if he came my way but Present Tak so adorable from the start and when he has tears in his eyes as he's asking her to leave with him, I just wanted to say: "Are you mad woman? If you don't want him, I'll take him!" :D Also he's all neat and Good Luck-esque with his hair and crisp white shirt ;) And above all, it's Present Day Tak that writes and reads aloud the 'rainbow letter' which makes me swoon and then drop dead :) In a good way.

I like the crazy hair of Future Tak, too, plus the way he looks up when he first sees the android approaching. He's leaning against the glass (in pain?) and he's just looking at her. Kimura is very good at looking :)

I have a further question re Tony and Faye. I think they're gorgeous together and they have chemistry in this film, too.

1. Is he in love with her or does he just think he is?

2. If so - is he just in love with her because he can't have her? He seems to have a thing for the unattainable

I know he talks about her as a kid sister at one point, but if you remember the final shots of Faye - it's her in the green shirt, glancing sidelong at the camera in an alluring fashion. He also talks about love implying that he is in love"

Apologies if anyone has seen some of this conversation twice, as I copied it out of one of my flocked posts. 2046 discussion deserves its own venue!

Personally, I'm not entirely decided on whether Tony's character is in love with Faye's character or not by the film's end. Perhaps he is in love with her as an idealization. Each time I watch it, I change my mind on what I think.

If you haven't seen koalathebear's gorgeous 2046 picspams, then what are you waiting for? Go! They're beautiful! :)
