I'm pretty foolish sometimes. For some reason, I was thinking of just spending practically the entire summer galavanting around on Amtrak trains, meeting cool people in the lounge car, listening to my (not yet purchased) iPod, and stopping off in various cities around this great nation of ours to eat people's food and sleep on their floors. Sounds like a pretty great life, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it's also a surprisingly expensive life. Amtrak has several weekly specials for trains departing from/arriving in Chicago. The furthest west they go, however, is St. Louis. St. Louis, if you didn't know, is a long way from Portland.
Long story short, I basically have two options right now. Either I can condense my months long excursion into a week or two (the likely and sensible course), or, less likely and much less sensible, I could experiment with hitchhiking. Either way, I probably won't be making it very far East until later in the summer - probably mid to late August. I could leave earlier, but then I would miss the White Stripes show here in Portland (which I may not go to anyway, if the person I'm supposed to be going with flakes out), and I would also miss my family's vacation to California -- which I kind of don't want to miss, because, if I do move East this fall, I will be seeing a LOT less of my parents and younger brother.
So, if you've been expecting me for the past few months, you'll probably have to go on expecting for a while longer. And if you have any advice about hitchhiking, I'd love to hear it.
