Okay, so...I'm a huge Sherlock Holmes fan. Have been for years. Love the character, love the canon, am always on the lookout for new Holmes pastiches. When I first saw the description of this movie, my first thought was, "My god, what have they done? They're taking this character with thousands of pages of history and completely fucking him up. This is going to be horrible."
But...
I am nothing if not adaptable. I adore Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka, but I also like Johnny Depp's just fine, even though they're completely different characters. And after seeing this trailer, I think I can find room in my heart to enjoy a movie about a more physical, edgy, and (dare I say it?) romantic Holmes. I mean, it's in the canon that Holmes is an excellent boxer and stickfighter. You never saw it in Doyle's stories, but he did mention it. And edgy? Holmes *defined* edgy. Cocaine addict, probably bipolar (certainly suffering from depression), self-destructive, moody, likely to be hanging out in the bad end of town...yeah, Holmes wasn't a fluffy bunny in a deerstalker hat. And Downey (who I absolutely loved in Iron Man) seems to be able to pull it off. Can't say as I cared for the very last scene in the trailer (I think that was taking things a bit too far--thinking about Sherlock Holmes naked is just a little further than I want to go, thanks) but I will be right there on Christmas Day ready to see this one, and if it's half as good as the trailer makes it out to be, I'll enjoy it just fine.
